I have recently began getting a crackling when I play on my twin reverb. The amp is about 5 years old and still has the original G.T. power tubes. In case the sockets / contacts were dirty, I have cleaned them with contact cleaner. Also, the speaker connectors have been soldered on opposed to the slip on jackets, so I'm thinking I have probably eliminated those two factors.

The crackling is only present when I've been playing for a while, maybe 10-20 minutes. It's only present with notes, period.... never when not playing. It's more noticeable when I'm playing louder and deeper notes. My instincts think it's something to do with something getting vibrated or so..... But, could this just be a case of failing power tubes?

and ....... If so, I would like to replace the power tubes with the most lush, full, thick, bass heavy tubes available. I'd like them to still sparkle but not be brittle or tin'y (like JJ's are IMHO). Anyone have any suggestions one that tip?

Thanks!

Never had a problem with JJ's in my 76 SF Twin or any of my other amps for that matter. Was the bias correctly set? If any power tube is set too cold, it'll sound thin. Bad filter caps can cause problems too.

Your cable might be bad. Have you tried using a different one?

There are a bunch of things that could be wrong. I would get a proffessional opinion and be very careful, you could get a very serious shock even with it off and unplugged!

Yeah for sure check the cable first but to me it sounds like a cold solder joint. I don't see to much problems with the RI series amps though. I would find a tech and have him actually test your tubes if there is one near you.
