Hi all,

I've just bought a Blues Junior "Texas Red", which is my first proper all tube amplifier, and I'm a bit suspicious that there's something not quite right with it.

When the "FAT" switch is on, the amp is very quiet, even at high Master volumes, and only a slight electrical hum is heard, which is what I'd sort of expect. However, if I turn the FAT switch off, there is a very loud buzzing, which is solely dependent on the Master volume - the higher the Master volume the louder the buzz, even if all other knobs are on 1.

This is the case regardless of whether my guitar is plugged in or not. When it is plugged in the buzz is constant and doesn't react to the volume of the guitar or how I play.

If I turn the amp off and on again (with the FAT switch off) the buzz gradually appears within about 3-4 seconds.

Any ideas what could be wrong, if anything? I should point out that I'm no expert in tube amps just yet!

I'm not going to go messing about with any of the electronics or the tubes having just got the amp, so if people tell me it sounds like something is definitely wrong I'll send it back and get a replacement.

Also, apologies if this post seems similar to the one below by nicinflorida, but I thought it was a different enough problem to warrant another thread.

Cheers for any help you can give.

I would suggest that maybe you check the tubes in the back to make sure they are all secure and in as far as they can go. It might be a faulty power tube. I'm not exactly sure on how to check for faulty tubes, but i'm sure someone else that reads this thread will be able to answer that question and offer their advise.

OK, thanks for that. I took the back cover off the amp and checked that the tubes were all seated correctly - they appeared to be as far as I can tell. Made no difference to the buzzing.

Could other Blues Junior owners maybe confirm that the general background amp noise should be no different whether the FAT switch is on or off? Certainly not to the extent I'm hearing anyway.

Even on half master volume the buzz is loud enough to be heard in another room in the house!

I'm leaning towards sending this back, but I'd still appreciate any further comments.

Thanks a lot.

Hi

My Texas Red amp has a bit of a buzz too, but not as loud as yours.
I am new to tube amps so I am not sure if it normal.

Regards.

....shouldn't make any difference whether the fat switch is on or off. My BJR NOS makes no abnormal buzz or hum either way. I say something's not right.....
