I gigged and rehearsed with mine for a couple of months before I started having problems with it. I bought the amp because I wanted something different and lighter. I have a 76 Twin, Deluxe Reverb and a few other amps. I just don't want to bring something vintage to some of the clubs I play in. I got smoked once when my 64 Vibrolux Reverb took a walk while we were packing up. It was my favorite amo and I had it since I was a kid. I don't bring my 63 Supro or my 72 Strat to some places for the same reason.

I tend to stay out of those situations anymore. I value my equipment and don't need to be in a crowd like I used to. Just friends and family.

I just traded in a Twin I've had for 20 years on the new Deluxe VM.

It's the best sounding amp I have tried in many years, and at half the weight of the Twin, it's even more impressive.

The reverb is the best digital I've heard, and the delay and chorus are great for the low mixes I use.

I had a HR Deville and a HR 4/10 years ago, when they first came out, and they both had major issues with versatility. Not this new Deluxe. I think Fender really hit the mark with this one. Get one while you can, as I don't see the used market for these getting flooded, or the prices getting any better, even for the used ones. I know I would not sell mine for the price I paid.

Man... I'm glad I've got time... this is by no means an easy decision

I've slowed down a bit too. I play in a couple of blues bands a couple times a month in nicer places. A long time ago I used to do festivals as a back up musician for different blues musicians. It was fun. I have too many commitments now with family.

I had a hot rod deluxe for around two years, and then sold it because I thought I didn't want to play guitar anymore. That was probably the most stupid decision in my life.

The hot rod sounds just, amazing. If you think it's too loud (and for anyone who hasn't tried it and is laughing at 40 watts, try it, then we'll talk) use a put a THD hot plate. Then you can push your amp to its sweet spot but not have your head blown up. The hot rod feels a ton more solid than the VM and the built in effects turns me way off of the VM. Fender players like stompboxes, not limited built in effects... end of story. Also I'm not sure about the VM but the Hot Rods reverb is amazing.

I'm actually currently looking for one of the used red ones on the market, and then I'm throwing the matching cab underneath. When I get it, I'm simply going to look up what parts 'go bad' and I'm replacing them. Channel 2 (drive) is really limited so I wouldn't suggest using that. But if you put any type of overdrive in front of a hot rod, you're in touch responsive tone heaven.

But of course, this all comes down to you. I'd give yourself at least an hour with each amp, trying many different settings and different levels of volume. And of course, use your main guitar to try these.

Best of luck.

Let me just start by saying that I am 53 and have long outlived my glory days. I retired in Aug. 07 and decided to pick up the ax again. I had worked part time up to 4 nights a week until Nov. 1997 when i had just had enough of the biz. I did not touch a guitar or even listen to music for 10 years so for me to pick it up and get my chops back is a gift from God. I play in a praise and worship band that travels all around and just got back from a concert in Maryland this morning. I needed an amp that would give me a good clean and decent od. I had been using my 1990 carvin xv112 but was really fighting to control the volume and could not for the life of me get the tone that was in my head. The Deluxe VM solved that for me. I can't begin to tell you how many guitarsits have come up to me and wanted to know what my setup was. When they see the VM foot pedel and a tube screamer they can't believe that is all I am using and are impressed with the clean and od tones that I am getting. I know that it's not just my tired old ears alone! The jury is out on the amp being dependable. I will be the first to say if I have problems but 8 concerts so far have been fine. I am building a new cabinet for the amp which will give me alittle more room to put a thicked back panel on there and am gonna put 2 10's in it also. I like customizing my stuff and it takes a minite to remove the chassis and switch it over. I am really happy with this purchase but time will tell about reliability. Don't over look what this amp can do and go give it a test drive; it might be for you!

Johnny,
I'm the same age as you. You never really outlive your glory days. Look at Les Paul. He's 93 and still plays 2 sets on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club in NY. I saw him twice and he was amazing for a man his age. His hands are crippled by arthritis but he still plays and is as vibrant and sharp as ever. As long as you have fun, that's all that matters. I still have a ball. I never walked away from playing. I only play locally now.

63 Supro, you are right about that! I am playing better now than I did before I quit and am really enjoying it. It has been a gift from God! Are you from Philly? I grew up in So. Philly and I think you were talking about Bennie, weren't you?

You mean Bennie Cintioli? Cintioli's Music on Oxford Ave at 5 points? I bought my Twin from him 35 Years ago and I still have it! He still has his music store but he moved to a bigger space on Oxford Ave he's still doing pretty well too.

Good to hear that Bennie is still going good. There were many times he helped me out and bent over backwards to do it. I bought my first gold top LP deluxe from him in 1970 when he was still on Rising Sun Ave. It was a factory second and I paid $215.00 for it! Didn't have enough for a case and Bennie gave me one anyway. He is a good man and I miss those trips up to his store!

When I bought my Twin in 76, I traded my 74 Bandmaster and 200 bucks for it.
Johnny, do you remember the Empire Rock Club and Genes on the Boulevard?

I sure do! They were the happening clubs back then. Great time to be young and free it was!

Seriously good time to be a musician. The guys I played with back then joined a band call the A's and are now in a band called the Peace Creeps with Richard Bush from the A's. I still do a few songs with them sometimes with another band. Another friend of mine was with Ken Kweeder. Great bunch of musicians.
