I saw the schematic of the Deluxe VM and it's not all tube amp :(

But before to conclude anything, I would go for a test-drive!

I'm still really happy with my modified Hot Rode Deluxe :)

Well... that's my budget, and... hmmm... can anyone think up any other amps?

You guys stick me in confusion because most that vote like the HR, but most that actually reply (and have good points by the way) chose the VM.

Ampeg J20. Hand Wired 20 watts for around 800 bucks. No digital bells and whistles. Just Volume, Tone and tremolo. The amp is clean and sounds awesome. Remember 20 watts is not half as loud as 40 watts.

Mmmm... Yeah... and I want 40 watts...

Do you need a new amp right now? If it takes you a few months longer to save up some more money to have more options, then you ought to do it.

Umm... no, I won't buy it now, and I am still saving, but I have a lot of other things I've been saving money for.

I guess I could throw a bit more in the jar, but is that enough?

Also... I think I've decided on the Hot Rod. The reasons are as followed: 2 inputs, I can easily just buy those effects as pedals, I can stack it on a cab, and I know I can get any disto I want from it. Remember, though, this is by no means final.

Good decision mac67!
Let's keep things simple :)

If you need less loudness, there's the 65 Deluxe Reissue, only 22 watts!
it's a little bit more reliable :)

Oh, don't forget you get a five year warranty on purchase of an amplifier!

The Deluxe Reverb Reissue has 2 real channels 4 inputs, better reverb, is more reliable and will hold up to gigging better plus it sounds immensely better. It also cuts better meaning it will cut through a mix better. I've been blown off the stage by a DRRI while using my HRDlx. I have since went back to gigging with my Twin. The DRRI is seriously more reliable than the HRDlx.
The distortion is horrible on the HRDlx without a tube change. I put JJ's in mine to tame it and make it a little more usable.

My Jazzmaster Ultralight is solid-state, and it kicks the butt of most tube amps.

Try the VM out. I have the Band-Master VM (the head version) and it's a great sounding amp, run through a 15" cabinet.

Evaluate with your ears, not your preconceptions.

Supro63: I agree with you, but on the other hand the HRDX cost less (in my case was a gift for my birthday!)
But with subtle mods and tube changes, It has becomed better!

lpdeluxe: sure It's preconceptions, I still haven't heard the VLM deluxe, will give it a try :)

Don't do any mods to the board or you'll void the warranty.
I think I have too much to compare it against. I made a living for a long time playing music and I never saw so much in throw away equipment in my life as there is now. Amps are pretty much tools to me. It's like I'd rather get tools from Craftsman than the dollar store. If you rely on something, it should work most of the time.

I just did the Steve Dalman R103 mod to my reverb and it made the reverb usable to me now. I didn't like the sound out of the reverb once turned past 3. All you do is clip one end of the resistor and bend it back or totally remove it. Only takes a few minutes. As far as warranty is concerned, I am going to get the tone I want first and formost and not be held hostage to a warranty. I feel I could fix most anything on the amp anyway or get someone to do it. Service is not an issue to me. This mod removes the treble bypass that overpowers the reverb in the HR circuit. I have a 3 spring Accutronics reverb tank on order and on thursday it should arrive. I used this same tank for my Peavey and it sounds nice in that. http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/ This is the Unofficial Fender Hot Rod site with mods and tips.

I've been aware of Justin's site since he put it up. Be careful if you do any solder work on the board. The traces lift very easily. I can't stand the reverb on my HRDlx either. It sounds nothing like any of my other fender amps. I'm probably going to dump my HRDlx just because I never had to work so hard to get the tone I want and keep the amp working. I have a few other amps so I really have no worries. I only mentioned the warranty because you might need it in the future. This is the first Fender amp I've owned since 1964 that needed warranty work and I've owned lots of them. I never had an amp fail so much as my HRDlx. I'm planning on building a Mission 5e3 Deluxe clone by the end of the year.

After I bought this I had a chance to get a US made HR DLX for $425 and I almost bought it anyway. It was spotless and like new. I was afraid to spend the money at the time but rethinking, I should have bought it. The cover and footswitch and everything.

A friend of mine did a PTP home brew in his HRDlx cab after the amp took a final dump and the board went up in smoke. He used the transformers and saved a few bucks. This thing sounds and looks awesome.

There is always an option out there to take advantage of. I hope I get a lot of use out of mine before I have to consider that tho. I don't gig with it. I use it for my own enjoyment and haven't taken it anywhere yet. I probably will some time.
