I have played the HR, and like that well enough, but I like the added effects on the VM. But I like that you can get a cab under th HR and it's two inputs. My opinion of the HR's tone keeps going up and down (though still always on the positive side)...

I just want to know which you think I would need more. I will be bringing it various places in the near future, and the HR's inputs could come in handy. But I'm worried it may not supply that incredible metal sound I love (which, as you can see in my sig, I can help supply that well enough), though it's great for every other style I like, including rock, blues, and clean...

So what does the VM have for me (though I have seen youtube videos that give me an idea and IMO sound great.)? Which should I take home in the end?

Of course I'd say go with the VM.

Here's what the drive channel sounds like with nothing but a touch of reverb.

For me neither. I already have a HRDlx. It sounds good but I can't gig with it. But what it all boils down to is what you like and what you're looking for and how big you car is. :D

Wait; Why can't you gig with it?

Oh, and Texas, that did sound good... but maybe it was the recording, but it wasn't my desired tone... though I could still find it on the amp, I'm sure.

Because mine is too unreliable. It died on three separate occasions on stage in the first year I owned.

The Hot Rod Deluxe is a little too limited for me. It has a predetermined "rock" sound that I don't like.

The VM is more organic and lets me sound more like myself. I have the Band-Master head into a Hartke 1-15 bass cab, and it's warm and rich.

The HRD just sounds too pre-digested for me.

It's good it works for you. That's all that counts. The VM (Vintage Molested) series sounds too digital and not real special to me, but I'm not much of a hybrid amp guy. I'm way too old school and really don't like built in effects. The HRDlx can be tamed with a tube change, but even with that, mines not real reliable. If you want organic, try a 5e3 Deluxe. It'll blow you away with it's versatility and tonal range. The dynamics alone are amazing. I'm glad I didn't sell off all my old amps.

Well... that's my budget, and... hmmm... can anyone think up any other amps?

You guys stick me in confusion because most that vote like the HR, but most that actually reply (and have good points by the way) chose the VM.

Yeah, I'm sure you could. I'm still tweaking mine. :)

What it boils down to is what's sounds good and works for YOU. These polls are basically useless and are nothing but personal opinions. The individual musician is what counts. Your playing technique, guitar, strings, pups etc. will make you sound different from anyone else. There is no right or wrong. How I feel about my HRDlx is well known. It does sound really good though. I never had a problem with the sound. I can always tweak the knobs, but tweaking reliability is another issue altogether.

I side by sided them and chose the VM. The clean is sparkly and the od to me at least, is more useable and alittle hotter. I have been giging with mine for 7 weeks now and it has been great. I got away from Fender for 20 years and went to Carvin but i am glad that I tried the VM instead of ordering another Carvin. I actually use all of the effects and ahve gotten a lot of compliments on how good they sound. I also use a Maxon 808 to tighten up the od for solos and it gives me the sound that I have in my head and makes my solos really jump out of the mix. I have been running the clean channel at about 4 and it stays nice and clean and the od I have been using both the gain and vol. at 5. This gives ne a nice blues sound with the guital volume rolled back and with the 808 and more guitar vol. it just screams and sustains forever but with a singing, Santana like quality. I am happy so far with the amp and time will tell on reliability but I do baby my amps and won't let them travel in the van with the rest of the gear to minimize the beating. I changed out the tubes to JJ's and had a Eminnence Lil Texas laying around and also put that in as well. I have the Deluxe VM. I will say that I do agree with 60Supro in that the build could be better and not for a lot more $. The back panel is junk and there is no lifting up the amp with one hand on that. I intend to build a nicer cabinet with custom tolex and grill to house it.

Ok, well good... Thanks for the responses.

I wish soon to be able to try the VM so I could make the final decision.

Oh, and the point of the poll really was to get other player's opinions, as I do value them, mostly because I haven't tried the VM out. On another note, this probably wouldn't even have been a thread if I had tried the VM by now.

I have a Peavey Classic 30 (with JJ's) which I'm thinking about changing the speaker on. After much deliberation I've come up with two possibilities that I like so far. The Eminence Lil Texas, or the Swamp Thang. I still have to check out a few more brands before I can make a choice.

Could you tell me a little more about how the Lil Texas speaker changed the tone and what you like/dislike about it?

Tex,it did slightly change the tone by adding a little more mids and tightened up the bass responce. I really notice it morso on the clean chanel where there is no mid control. It is close on the drive chanel and I would say that the JJ's had a greater impact there. It also shaved about a pound off of the total weight. If I didn't already have the Lil Texas and was able to compair the two, I would probably stay with the stock speaker. Also the neo speaker is a little shallower so there is some space now between the spkr. and the power tubes.
