I have never heard a completely silent tube amp. There was always background hiss which gets louder as you turn up the volume/gain.

I didn't say my BJr was completely silent. I said it was "virtually silent" at "home volumes", V at 5 to 9 on the dial and MV at 2 to 6. The hiss is negligable and not noticed. If both volumes are dimed it definitely hisses a fair amount but in the type of situation where both volumes would be all the way up I would think the crowd noise and other instruments would make even that hissing not a problem.

nic- If your BJr was quiet until recently it makes it seem like it may not be a power problem unless you are using a different outlet or something else changed outside of your amp.

It still sounds like a power supply problem to me but I could be wrong.
The power supply caps in these things aren't what they used to be. They're usually imported from Taiwan and a lot smaller than they used to be. It's a shame, even the Twins have cheap caps in them. The last time I had my HRDlx repaired, one of the caps actually blew the top off. This was after it was 3 months old. The 5 watt cement resistors also had to be replaced.

I have tried all the outlets in my house and the same hissing/hum is there and like I said it starts up after about 5-10 seconds after it is switched on. I am going to try the outlet "grounding" (for lack of a better term) to see if that helps. What is really weird is my twin reverb is virtually silent, in the same outlet(s).
I don't know enough about amps and I am not real handy when it comes to electrical stuff like that. So, I might have to break down and take it to a local shop to have it looked at. Or, I can use it as is, it is very difficult to hear the hum when I play. I am a little OCD when it comes to stuff like this.

That's very understandable; I'm the same way when it comes to my tone and equipment. You pay good money for a reliable peice of equipment and you are the customer. So I would personally have it looked at by an amp tech and get it fixed.

I removed the back panel to gain better access to the tubes for re-seating purposes and noticed that mine would hum after 5 - 10 seconds without the back but returned to normal once the back was refitted!

 Could it be linked to the foil sheilding on the inside of the rear panel?

Check into the BillM mods. You are experiencing one of two potential problems that he can fix or you can fix. You need to dress the power transformer leads and reroute the phase inverter ribbon cable. All Blues Juniors will have less hum and/or oscillation if these two simple fixes are done to the amp. I did them and they worked well for me.

I think it is safe to say, a visit to an amp tech is in order.

thanks everyone for all your input, ideas and general information.

I have a brand new Blues Junior NOS with a loud hum when the FAT switch is out. (see other post). This humming thing seems to be a recurrent irritation.
