Greetings, this is my first post here. So i'm looking to get a DRRI in the next month or so and I was wondering how would this amp work with an Avatar 2x12 extension cab. I've seen this combination before on another forum and thought it looked killer. But looks aside how would this work out with the headroom? I know these amps usually break up at around 4-5 with single coils roughly; but if I used an extension cab underneath it would this make it so I could turn the amp up a few more notches on the volume and get some more clean headroom? I was thinking about using just the amp itself for at home practices and using the cab with it for jams/gigs.

And another question I have is how reliable are the DRRI's? I know they are PCB made but are they less of a hassle than the HRD series of amps? I have a HRD right now and let's just say it's been a love hate relationship. Thanks in advanced.

It's a matter of personal preference for liking the DRRIs vs the HRDs. I had an original '65 and the headroom is a tad better with the RIs in my opinion.

An extension cab of any kind really won't give you anymore headroom and will break up around the same point. I know someone that uses a tube preamp along with a BBE sonic maximizer model 482 and gets some decent cleans with the 2-12 Avatar before breakup.

Good luck!

I haven't tried an extension cab yet with my DRRI yet, but I've had it for about 2 years and never had any issues. I love the size weight of it, super easy to transport. I recently bought a Dr. Z Trainwreck attenuator - that's a cool little piece of gear too and helps to bring the amp alive without splitting my ears - it's pretty amazing how loud 22 watts can be :D
