What would be some good tubes to put in my BDR for a little more distorted tone. I'd like to be able to reach a distorted tone at lower volumes. I have to turn it up way to loud to reach that "breaking point". I'm currently just using the stock tubes in it right now. I haven't replaced them yet.

If you want a tube that breaks up early, nothing beats an NOS RFT 12ax7/ecc83 in your V1. There's not a modern tube on the planet that compares. You definitely won't be sorry. I've got to tell you though, Fender tube amps aren't as transparent to tube differences as say a Mesa. So it won't magically transform a Fender sound into something else, just make it break-up earlier.

Just keep in mind 12ax7's shape your tone much more than the power tubes. Most people think it's the other way around.

Another route you can take is with an NOS RCA 12ax7a or Long-plate. The long plate has a more powerful deep tone and punch to it, but In your V1 you might want to get some 1" heat-shrink and slip it over the tube (it'll melt onto the tube simply by use) to resist against microphonics. But it will darken up a Fender sound if you feel it's too high-strung.

If you don't feel like you want to go with NOS tubes and would like to stick with modern tubes, my personal favorites have been Sovtek LPS.

As far as the power tubes go, I personally use Sovtek 5881s. But I hear a lot of good things about JJs for distortion. I can't confirm anything on that myself though.

Hope this helps man.

I just put JJ 12AX7's and Winged =C= 6L6's in mine, definitely better than stock. I think it is breaking up a little sooner and the tone is much warmer sounding than the stock GT's were.

A few weeks ago I found out there's a great amp tech operating a shop literally a block away from my house, I can see it out my window...so $$$ permiting I can see some tube rollin' in my future as he keeps a decent variety in stock.

I feel like a kid finding out they opened a new candy store in town. :D
