Hi All,
HELP.....I've had my blues junior for 4 years, I turned it on the other day and after about 4 seconds it started to HUM/BUZZ bad, without my guitar plugged in and it does it with the guitar plugged in as well. Is this a sign of a bad tube or the tubes starting to die? I'm thinking of replacing all the tubes, is this something anyone can do? Is it as simple as pulling one out and putting a new one in?

thanks for all your help.

The buzzing may very well be a tube issue. You can switch out the tubes, one at a time, to see if that makes a difference. Anybody can do it - you can find some info on replacing tubes on some tube suppliers' websites.

I think you're on the right track. Good luck.

thanks for the advice - I thought what I'd do is buy all the tubes and replace each one one at a time to see if and when the hum goes away. I'm just concerned about taking out the tubes and replacing them. As long as I unplug the amp I should be okay.

Yep - just unplug the amp, pay attention to line up the pins when you insert a tube. Handle the tubes with super clean hands or with cloth gloves or a clean rag. Try to handle the tubes by the plastic base, if they have one. That's about it.

I have a Pro Junior, and am really happy using a pair of Tung-Sol 12AX7s in the preamp, and two Groove Tubes EL84s in the output section. I've never tried JJs, but the Tung-Sols and GTs sound excellent to my ears. Pretty much everyone will have a different opinion of which tubes sound the best. I'd say just get a bunch and experiment, see what you like. Some break up earlier, and some later; some are warmer sounding, while others like to distort in a fizzy manner. It's all up to what you like.

They make these tubes called THD Yellowjacket. Now I'm not sure if they make them to substitute a 6L6 for an EL84 but they do make a variety of them for different tubes. Try www.thetubestore.com, they would have them. Hope I'm helping at all

No. They won't even fit. Unless you know what you're doing, and are willing to make major modifications to your amplifier, use EL84s. In fact, EL84s are, I believe, the only type of common power tube that will fit in your amplifier. Even if you could get something else in the socket -- which you can't -- the voltages would be different and your tubes and/or amp would die a sad, electric death.
