Hey guys,

I was wondering if someone could tell me if the the two big tubes in the back of my super sonic turning brown is normal (as if a light bulb burnt out). i haven't noticed any change in sound but one groove tube logo is white and the other is brown with traces of white.

thanks a lot,

rob

It's hard to say. Might just be the paint can't stand the heat or maybe there is a little more heat than normal. How old are the tubes? If they are over a year old with constant use change them or if over 2 years old I would change them anyway.

hey,

thanks. yeah the tubes themselves are at least 3 years old. bought it (amp) last year but there is a 60th anni sticker on the back dating the amp to 2006. must be time for new ones but i'll give them a little more time considering i hardly use them in the first place. i might of even bought it that way... new to tubes and didn't check.

thanks

I had some tubes like that, where the paint got brown. One set was fine, but one of the other tubes died soon after I noticed the paint turning brown. The tubes were running too hot, and I put an adjustable bias pot in there. A new set of tubes may be in your future.

The important thing is to make sure they're not glowing red. It's called Red Plating and it means the tube is getting too much voltage and burning up.
