I've noticed that there are a lot of new products from amp brands aimed at the practice or bedroom player. For example, the Blackheart Killer Ant & the new Vox AC4TV, and some others. I wonder if Fender will take a stab at the low wattage tube amplifier craze and put out something similar under 5 watts or even a sub 1 watter. I would probably spring for it. Any thoughts?

I kind of agree. I believe the "Vintage Modified" Champ 600 is a 5W combo. In my own mind, anything smaller than 12 or 15 is totally useless -- they're too loud to crank for good tone late at night, and too quiet to jam with, particularly if there are drums involved. I suppose they have their niche, but I wouldn't buy one. I actually had an Epiphone Valve Jr. 5-watter for awhile and it went back to the store in relatively short order. I couldn't get a decent sound out of it.

Well my main gigging amp right now is a Pro Junior and I love it to death. It's an older American model, but still in great shape. It is a low wattage amp, but it doesn't really feel like it -- when it's turned up (I typically set it at 5/12 onstage) it is pretty impressive. Eventually what I want to do is get a THD Hotplate and a couple of big speaker cabs for it, much like Noel Gallagher.

Low wattage amps are great to record with. You can gig with little Pignose amp if you mic it. Low wattage amps are a lot more versatile than you think. :D Jimmy Page and Joe Perry and thousands of others record with low wattage amps.

I personally am not sold on them. People are tryin to get the sound of a cranked 6l6 or el34 amp at lower volumes and its not going to happen. I get more satisfaction playing with a good preamp and poweramp thats loud enough for anything you do and can be turned down enough for the bedroom.

My brother has a mesa f50 that sounds great at all volumes as well. It has a good preamp built in. It can also drown out a drummer if needed. The volume knob is sensative in the 0-2 range, but you can get it turned down enough.

My DRRI sounds just great at low volumes. Low enough for the bedroom. Also it'll blow your hair back when you crank it. If the drummer is too loud for a DRRI, you don't need a bigger amp, you need another drummer! Really though, I like amps in the 10-30 watt range, usually in a 1 x 12 combo. They sound great quiet or really loud; it's the most versitile choice IMO. But that's just me. I might buy a boutique Class-A 5-watter, maybe, just to record with, if it really sounded super duper grrrrrrrrreat!

Exactly. Recording is where these things can shine.

I'm actually thinking about buying one of these little guys for myself. More often than not, I find myself sitting on my couch practicing with NO amp because I'm too lazy to setup my usual amp. I'm used to it, but it's not all too inspiring to practice for two hours listening to an electric guitar with no amp! It would also have to have a headphone jack because I seem to be practicing heavily at 3am, these days!

I've had my Champ 600 for a year now and I think it's a gerat amp for the price. With some new tubes it sounds fantastic. Not to mention the 6" speaker does it no justice.

I agree for recording, specially home recording a 15watt or 20 watt is really good :)
