I need a new amp. I need to be able to gig with it, it should be tube, I want a solid modern sound, I want it to be a bit versitile (but it doesn't have to be like a Line 6), and less than a thousand dollars.

Any ideas? It doesn't have to be Fender, but I'd prefer it to not be a Marshall.

hmmm.....what about the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40 watt tube amp or the Hot Rod DeVilles 212 and 410 with 60 watts of pure tube power.

I'll get the obligatory Blues Junior recommendation out of the way by saying that they are wonderful and versatile, particularly with a couple of pedals in front of them. Here are some other suggestions:

If you want an eminently portable amp with great sound and very, very simple controls, try the Fender Pro Junior. It's 15 tube watts and comes with a volume and tone control. I love mine. 'Nuff said.

Another amp that I've heard people rave about, although it may be small for what you're looking for, is the Epiphone Valve Jr head. It's only 5 watts, but they are very popular and can be run through a variety of speaker cabinets.

Peavey, despite their horrible reputation, is a maker of excellent quality amps. Their Classic 30 is more or less the equivalent of a Fender Deluxe and is an excellent sounding amp. 30 watts is about as big as you can go and get breakup with the master volume dimed -- amps generally sound better when running full tilt; master volume controls do colour the sound.

If you're amenable to buying a used amp, look for Traynors and Garnets. They're both Canadian manufacturers with excellent reputations. I know that Traynor still makes good amps, but Garnet, a company from Winnipeg, doesn't make much in the way of amps any more. Both companies, however, are still all over the used market.

Finally, it might be worth your while to hunt around for either an old Ampeg or an old Boogie combo. If you like sounding like Keith Richards, these are well worth the $1000 you'll shell out. Hard to find, yes, but worth every cent.

I agree with going with the Blues jr. or the Peavey Classic 30. Both are very good amps.

I'd look for a Cyber-Twin. You can pick up the original used for around $600, SEs are touching the $900 range. Great amps with lots of versatility, you'll be able to cover just about anything. I've had the original and now have the SE, both are worth having.

Peavey is one of those amp manufacturers that has garnered a totally undeserved reputation for making bad amplifiers. It is a cliche amongst many guitar players that "friends don't let friends play Peavey." This is ridiculous. I own a Peavey Bandit 65 and it is one of the most dependable, best sounding amps I've ever had -- only now that I've made the transition to tubes have I let it sit unattended for awhile. I'm sure you'll find that many many players love their Peavey amps. I know I do.

I don't know how much money you want to spend, but the Deluxe Reverb is one awesome amp. I did my Soul of Tone test drive with it, and now I want to sell my Hot Rod Deluxe...

Crazy. When I was amp shopping last year (replacing my SS practice amp), I asked some friends of mine who are gigging musicians what they'd get if they were buying their first tube combo, and consistently heard "Twin", "Blues Jr", and "Classic 30".

And after playing all of them in local music stores, it wasn't even close. I took the C30. It's great. Built like a tank, and sounds fantastic.

I totally agree with you. Peavey has something of a bad reputation, but like I said, my Bandit 65 is one of the best amps I've ever had. I don't own a Classic 30, but I would definitely consider it if I was in the market for a bigger tube combo. They're cheaper than Fenders and the quality is probably just as good.

Classic 30 is a great versatile amp or a Classic 50 for more POWER! Dependable reputation from those I know.

Man, I'll support Peavey until the day I die. I was just alluding to the fact that many guitar players I know tend to deride those who play Peavey gear. They're just wrong...
