I am thinking of adding a bit of bass to my repertoire...solely too fool around with around the house...can I run it through my guitar amp without any ill effects to the amp?

And I realize it won'y sound quite as it should but I'll deal with that for the time being.

Depends on how loud you run it. If you're playing at bedroom volumes, probably not. Keep in mind, however, that guitar amps are not designed to handle the frequency of a bass. It can be done, but you're better off investing in a dedicated bass amp rather than run the risk of blowing your guitar amp to smithereens.

Running it at low volumes should be safe, just don't expect it to sound amazing

I agree with others get a bass amp. Depending upon the amp they are not designed for bass signals. Not only the speakers will suffer also the electronic will too at constant use.

Seriously, get a bass amp. You will eventually damage the speaker and it really isn't good for the amp itself. The low frequency vibrations can rattle a lot of stuff loose and possibly do some component or even pcb damage.
