I would like to change the 12AX7 in V2 in my HRDx with a 5751 (70% gain instead of 100%).in order to modify the drive channel sound.
I wanted to know if there is a risk of damage doing that.
And what about a 12AV7, wich is 41% gain ?

Thank you very much !

I have used a 5751 in V-1 in every tube amp I have owned since 2000 and love the tone.

Same 5751 is my preferred v1 tube, and 12at7 in v3

I suggest for V1 a 12au7, V2 Penta Labs 9th Gen and V3 Sovtek 12ax7 LPS long plate spiral low noise tube. A 5751 will work in V2. This will adjust your sweet spot by using the 12au7 in V1. I did it and will never look back.

12au7 has a gain factor of 19%, it does not tame the amp it squashes it.
The 12au7 should give a very nice clean sound, at the expense of volume and breakup characteristics

Gain factor of common 12a*7 tube types.
12ax7 - 100%
5751 - 70%
12AT7 - 60%
12AY7 - 45%
12AV7 - 41%
12AU7 - 19%

Here is a convenient substitution chart

Separating posts,

I've never heard one of these amps with 12au's in them so would like to hear what they actually sound and behave like.

Mostly using mixtures of 5751's, 12at7's and 12ax7's.

I picked that tip up from an artical from Sweetwater about improving the tone of the HR DLX. He also mentioned the 12at7 and I tried it too but, it was best with the au7. I do not have any tracks to upload. Now instead of playing with volume on 3 I am at 6 - 7. Without EQ I could take it up higher to get to the sweetspot. This really helps the HR DLX and I recommend using the 12au7 in V1. 5751 is a 70% gain and the au7 is 19%. You can make your power tubes work and put out better tone. I also recommend an EQ.
