I am a rack-mounted kind of guy who has been converted... I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue and want to use a few pedals (TS808, delay, chorus and maybe tremlo). I assume going from guitar to pedals to amp is the way to go. Can someone please explain to me how I need to set these pedals up as far as signal strength and all is concerned. Do I need to keep the output levels high on these things or is it subjective? What things do I need to keep in mind with using pedals?

Also, I plan on keeping the amp tone fairly clean and using the TS808 for a little OD. Is this good practice?

Thanks!

There's no real "right" way to set up pedals. Just string them all together in a line and see how it sounds; then play with the order to see what you like. Orthodoxy suggests that the order go something like this:

Guitar -> Tuner -> Wah -> Overdrive -> Distortion -> Modulation effects (chorus, trem etc.) -> Amplifier.

That said, see what works best for you. Putting a wah after a dirt box can make some wild tones, as can putting a chorus before it. Just play around.

My pedalboard order is:

Guitar>Barber LTD (overdrive)>MXR Phase 90>Amp

Amp Effects Send>ISP Decimator (noise gate)>Eventide Timefactor Delay>Amp Effects Return.

The general rule of thumb that I've always heard is your modulation effects, delays and reverbs in your effects loop. I personally like the Phase 90 in front of the amp but definitely like the delay in the loop. It's much quieter that way for me. I have my noise gate in the effects loop to quiet my amp post preamp.

As far as effects level, if you're going to be leaving your Tube Screamer on all the time, you can definitely experiment with the volume higher and your amp volume lower or vice-versa. If you are going to be turning it off at all while playing, you will need to adjust it to the same level as your amp.

Bottom line, I would begin with what most players find works and experiment from there. As Vulkan mentioned, you can get different sounds with the same pedal just by moving it to another place in the chain. To add a cliche' "Let your ears be your guide", no one way is the Holy Grail.

Good luck and have fun!

Yeah, I should have mentioned effects loops. I've probably used one once, but I know a lot of guys -- particularly those who run a lot of effects -- use them all the time. I've never had a problem sticking effects out in front. It makes it simpler in my mind. About the only thing that "shouldn't" go in the effects loop are dirt pedals; modulation effects can sound radically different in the loop. The reason dirt boxes don't go in the loop is because, on a tube amp, you'd be wasting the overdrive, which is generally intended to "kick" the tubes up a notch or two. That said, it might sound cool. Who knows?

blues deluxe has the same stupid volume controls that the hot rods have, running input 2 with the 6dB attenuator really makes the amp more livable,

as far as effects really play around with them, short delay 30mS on the input of the amp can thicken up the tone of a strat, volume pedal in the effects loop is a variable master volume that lets you get solo volume boost, wah in the effects loop can be really cool depending on the wah, I tend to use a wah as a tone control or resonance rather than an effect,

Pedal order is really complex..... you can really get unique sounds by the way your pedals are arranged... :)

As for volume, I would recommend you set the gain of each pedal independently such that the volume is the same whether the effect is off or on. The exception, of course, is if you are using a particular effect to produce a volume change for solos. Something like a compressor, for example.
