Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I joined in hopes of finding anyone aware of what is happening with my HRDx. When I play lower notes (like notes from the low E), on low volumes it just sounds like pure distortion. Even when turning up the amp, if I pluck the strings soft it is distorted. Strumming from the high E side of the guitar doesn't seem to be distorted. I believe it is a 2006, it is the 60th anniversary edition. The amp is playable, it only seems to do this with very soft strumming or picking. It could also be described as a buzzing sound also. Very fuzzy distortion. I did check the biasing and it is at 68 mV. So it's not like it is running too cold. Hopefully someone has had this issue. Thanks.

Just for more info, I bought this new. It still has original tubes. I have never had it over 2 for volume and have only about 10 hours total playing on it.

Nobody has any ideas? I was hoping someone has experienced this. The amp sounds better when strumming normal. Only when picking the lower notes very soft does this issue occur. :?:

Have you tried your guitar with a different amp?

To me, just making a guess here, you pickups may not be
creating a decent signal at the low end.

You might try swapping out the tubes to see if one of them is bad.

It could be the speaker, tubes, bad solder joints on the tube sockets a blown cap, you name it.

I have tried it with all my electric guitars, all 6 sound the same. I would almost think it could be the tubes, being 3 years old, but like I said earlier I only have about 10 hours total at low volumes.
I was also considering getting some new tubes just because of reading all the reviews of upgrading. I think I will plug another speaker in from my other amp and just eliminate the speaker from the possibilities.

The cheapest way for you to solve the problem is swap your tubes one at a time and test after each change. Make sure the tube you're putting in is good, and then see if that's the problem. Note: make sure your amp is unplugged every time you change the tubes.

Well I figured it out, it's the speaker. I plugged in a different speaker from my other amp and have no buzzing. It makes a sound almost like a blown speaker but only at really low volumes, kinda strange. I did have some moisture in my basement after a major rain storm. I'm thinking the cone got moist from the humidity and caused this issue. Thanks for the suggestions. I look forward to this forum.

Now I guess I can do a search for forums on best speaker options, lol.

doing a little diggin' on replacement speakers and ran across some "speaker break in" stuff. Is it possible I haven't played it enough and the cone is stiff? Just reaching for any answer that may save me money, he he.

If it helps I tell you that the screws of the speaker of my HRD were too loose. So i tighten the screws. So maybe your problem is the same issue.

I just went through the same thing last night with a new blues junior and it ended up being the power tubes microphonic. With extention cab it sounded fine, no vibration in front of the tubes. I hooked up a pro junior to it's speaker and it sounded fine then tried a old set of power tubes and it sounded fine.

I did buy a set of Eurotubes for it just to make sure. I got the Blues #2 set with the 6v6 tubes and it sounds beautiful. The distorted channel is even usable now, it is creamy not blatty.

Speakers take upwards of 40 hours of break in time. Also a speaker sitting can take on moisture and when drying out stiffen again. It is best to set up in your living room and tell the wife it has to be there so you will use it more to keep it working right. :D :D More music, less soap opera!
Normal volume will do to break it in.

To break a speaker in, you do want to turn it up and get the cone and coil moving in and out as much as you will ever need it to. Just be careful not to over do it.

I just ordered a Eminence GB128 for it, should be here Wednesday. Looking forward to hearing it. I ended up plugging my HRDx speaker into my other amp with the same result, so it has to be the speaker. Kind of a bummer though, cuz I never had the volume over 3 and have probably only 10 hours max on this amp. Oh well, hope it rocks with the new speaker.
