I took the back off of my FBDR to see how to get at the speaker and noticed that this electronic piece had some damage. What is it? What does it do? How do I get it repaired? So far, my amp seems to work OK even though it could be causing some issues. I do get a hum now and then that is fixed by tapping the top of the amp.

Also, I have a small piece of the shielding tape on the side of the amp that is missing - about the size of a quarter. Will that cause issues?

Thanks

Looks like a capacitor that has overheated and blown its top.
Should send it in to have it serviced and replaced.

Will playing through the amp cause any futher damage? I will not get to a repair center until next month and have a couple of very low volume uses planned.

Thanks!

Personally I would not even plug it in until it's fixed.

I agree with CAFeathers. That cap is part of the network that supplies high voltage (425 VDC) to your power tubes.

Listen to Chet. The cap is blown. Tell the tech to only use high quality American made replacements. Not cheap Taiwan components. What would bother me even more is what MADE it fail, not just that it failed. My HRDlx had all kinds of component failures in just a couple of months. Caps, and the 5 watt resistors failed too.

Any way to find out what caused this? The amp seems to play OK at least it has since I have bought it). Never knew it had an issue until I popped the back of the amp of to take a look at how to replace the speaker....

A tech should be able to track that down. Could be a number of things. The cap is designed to "vent" like that when there's a problem. Could be a loose connection, e.g. cold solder joint, or just a bad cap. It's part of the circuit that supplies high voltage that goes to the screen grid of your power tubes I believe. Definately have a tech check it out. That voltage is very high DC with enough current to cause death.
