Hi there from Brighton in the UK...

...it's my first time posting, and I have a question about using my Blues Junior for home recording.

In order to cut down on the sound that would travel through the house when recording, I was wondering if it was possible to unplug the cable from the speaker-jack, then hook up straight into the audio recording system's 'line-in' (Steinberg's MI-4).

I've been looking around online and have found some stuff about speaker level being different from line level... I don't need the recordings to be perfect, as they're mainly demo stuff to send to the band. But I don't want to fry anything, whether it's the amp or the Steinberg soundcard.

Guitar wise (though I don't think this matters at all) I'll mainly be using a Gibson ES-137 custom.

Thanks :)
John

That could seriously damage the amplifier. I don't know if you've heard this before but you are never supposed to turn amp heads on without a speaker load- even on standby.

crumbs, just as well I asked!! Thank you very much, you've just saved me a large repair bill it sounds like.

Is there any way around what I'm trying to achieve (i.e. record quietly using the Blues Junior)?

Just turn down the master volume to an acceptable level. I've recorded my Bluesjr at low volumes and been quite happy with the results, both clean and dirty.

It works, but there is a better solution because it just won't sound as good without the master dimed -- the speaker won't move as much air, the power tubes won't be working as hard.

I would suggest that you find a time when you can play loud and, if you've got an interior room like a bathroom, with no outside walls, put it in there. Then, mic it up with whatever you've got at the settings you choose and run a cable to another room and your PC. Then play from the other room using a long-ish cable (but not too long!). That should minimize outside noise and still let you get wicked tone from your BJ. I've actually had the best luck recording amps in the shower (with the water off, of course!) and a mic positioned somewhere near the ceiling. But hey, the beauty of recording is that setting everything up to sound just right is half the fun. Play around, experiment, and have fun.

Thanks guys, will give all this a go. We used to live in a flat that was an old converted Edwardian police station, and every wall was 2 foot of brick and the floor reinforced concrete, so recording there was fine, nobody heard a thing. The current place has paper thin floors, but we're moving again soon to somewhere where the bathroom trick might be just the job!

Also you could buy one of those boxes where you put the amp inside and crank it up like hell and then put the mic there and close the box and the sound doesnt come out of the box I forgot what theyre called but theyre very popular for home recording specially since tube amps behave at their best when cranked up ..... :)

Isolation Cabinet.

Which is essentially what the tub in the bathroom is :)
