Just a quick question... I just got the Fender Super Champ XD and was wondering about the "Line out" Is it possible to run from the line out, into my GNX3000 and then from my GNX3000 to my computer through my USB port? I am not sure if the "Line out" is set up for this or not. I just do not want to fry my GNX or my computer. Any help would be great! Thanks.

You should be able to use it with no problem, thats what the line out is for, recording or sending the digital signal to a PA system, computer, or even send it to the input of another amp. I haven't tried it out myself but i would feel totally comfortable doing it.

sine we are on scxd line out... another question.
I recently connected the line out to a power in on a fm 212. The sound ceased to come out from the scxd, and completely came from the 212, is this normal?
Also, connected in this way, am I getting the benefit of the sound of the tubes in the scxd as the fm 212 is solid state?
Thanks

1. The line out on my SCXD doesn't affect the power amp output [to the internal speaker]. Yours shouldn't either.
2. I've not seen a schematic, but my understanding is that the line out is after the 12AX7 in the signal path, so, if correct, you are getting some tube effect [whatever it may be] on the line out signal. I expect someone will jump in if they disagree,
3. Finally, to address the earlier posts, I've run the line out on my SCXD into front panel amp inputs [guitar inputs] of both SS and tube amps without any ill effects, multiple times over the past 6-8 months.
Have fun!

So is there anyone else out there with an answer to the beginning of this post? I emailed Fender and this is the reply I got "In theory is should work" (which to be honest I was not happy with that answer and am very disappointed in Fender)

Has anyone else done this? Anyone at all? Good or bad results?

Thank you

tk,

According to the schematic, the line out is before the tube section. The transistor section has all the effects, tone controls and preamp. The tube section is simply an amplifier.

The line out should not disconnect the speaker. The line out is configured to run either balanced or unbalanced (3 conductor or 2 conductor plugs). But it is buffered from the tube amp section by an op amp.

So if yours is cutting out the speaker, something seems amiss. My first impression is that it would not be damaging to the circuit, meaning that what has failed will not stress the rest of the circuit. There may be a short in a capacitor or resistor in the line out circuit. But if it were me, I'd want to get it replaced just in case. Maybe your dealer would take it back and either refund your money or exchange the unit.

You could make the argument that a line out never, never, never disconnects a speaker in amps. The purpose is to allow you to use your amp as a stage monitor, and you use the line out to plug into the house PA system for the audience to hear your guitar.

As far as using headphones, I don't know. If it were me, I would try it with cheap headphones. Also, I would turn the volumes all down to zero and then slowly turn the volumes up with the headphones on the table, not on my ears! Worst case is you burn out the headphones. Headphones are very high impedance, so they won't draw much power and I would not think they would load down the driver circuit or cause the amp circuitry to fail.

The line out should work fine into an interface to run into your computer. Just be aware that the line out will carry power supply hum. Mine does and it requires that I unplug the laptop and run it on battery to record. The grounding is the problem and is typical of tube amps. If you get too much hum, unplug your laptop.

Can you run the line-out directly into a line-in on a computer?

I would like to go directly from the amp into my Mac for GarageBand without spending money on a USB interface.

Yes, you should be able to go direct to your line-in on the Mac. But, computer sound cards are notoriously poor for recording music. It is worth a try since it is free, but I wouldn't be surprised if you find the sound to be thin or choppy or otherwise poor. There are USB interface boxes available for well under $100 that do a superb job. Lexicon, Line6, and mAudio make boxes that get excellent reviews from users. I have a Lexicon Alpha that does a super job. The Line6 comes with some interesting software but I'm not sure if it runs on a Mac. If you get a USB box, get one with at least 2 channels.

The MIC input to your computer will sound like crap, so be sure you are plugged into the line-in jack. An instrument plugged directly into your sound card MIC or Line-in jack will sound bad. You need a preamp or use the line-out of your SuperChamp. If you get excessive hum, unplug your computer if it is a laptop and see if it improves (it makes a big difference on my old Dell to unplug it).

I've plugged headphones into the line out but it is useless because the speaker is still on and it's louder than the headphone volume. The line out is just a line-level output, like the output of a keyboard or a drum machine, so it's hotter than a signal straight out of a guitar but it's not going to destroy any headphones or effects pedals. The speaker out is another story. But why didn't Fender just put a damn headphone jack on the SCXD and save everyone the trouble?
