I have gotten conflicting answers to this question, so hopefully there may be a consensus from users of thie amp.

The Manual says "Use Standby for 30 seconds when first switching the power on".

So, I take that as,
1 - Flip the Standyby switch on
2 - Wait 30 seconds BEFORE flipping the Power switch.

I have had salespeople tell me it didn't matter how you turned it on.
I have had an "amp tech" tell me it didn't matter either.
I have had other "amp tech's" tell me it did matter, but not in the same order (flip the Power Switch first, then the Standby).

My question is - If it doesn't matter, why have two separate switches?

By the way, this amplifier is absolutely brutal...my wife yells at me, some neighbors scream at me, my dogs run and hide...I Love it and it's capabilities, not just for irratating the new neighbors, but for its sound at about any volume level. At age 60 it's pretty hard to make me go wow. This amp does it....and it lets me easily feed my keyboard into it as well.

Thanks in advance for your input.

No.

To power up
-> Set Standby Switch to OFF/Standby position
-> Turn ON amp, wait a bit (30 seconds should be enough) for tubes to come up to operating temperatures (800+ degrees)
-> Flip Standby to ON and play away.

To shut down
-> Flip Standby to OFF/Standby and wait a bit
-> Turn power off

If you come off standby too soon tubes are struggling to operate before they are ready .

Is correct, standby switch is in standby position for at least 30 seconds after the power switch is turned on.
Standby Switch in ON position means the amp is live and trying to do its thing, :)

If it is really needed or not who knows :) back in the 50 & 60 I don't remember anyone worrying about it.
Radios/TV/Amps were all mostly point to point tube circuits you just flipped them on and waited till they started operating :)
But you could also run to any corner drug store to test your tubes and buy new ones if anything blew.

... and as to the high volume, here's how to manage that ...

Are you sure about the 800 degrees???? That's pretty damn hot. That would make my Twin like, 3 million degrees because of the quad power tubes. I don't think they get that hot on the outside anyway. Maybe the electrons do, I don't know.
The whole standby thing is so over rated. Turn on the standby first then power. After 30 sec. turn off the standby.

Many, many tube amps don't even have a standby switch. For example, my 74 Champ is one and my 64 Dano DM 10 is another. You will not vaporize yourself, your amp or your tubes by not using it. I have been playing almost nothing but tube amps for 40 years and have not had anything fail. On my Vibrolux Reverb, I just left it on and only used it during breaks to keep the tubes warm to avoid the warm up when we came back. I would get 5 or 6 years out of the power tubes.
Maybe the Groove Tubes need it. :D

Thanks for the replies.

The amps and radio's of my youth were as you said, turn it on and wait for it to play. I just wonder why the wording in the owners manual seems to backwards from what it should be? And as Supro reminded me, there weren't standby switches on amps I had as a kid, but I probably wouldn't have used them anyway.

Thanks for the link tom. There's a lot of interesting info there.

The loud is not necessarily a bad thing, but I suspect I should occasionally be a better husband, neighbor and dog-dad. I ONLY play something loud after I have worked a part out and finally have it down....I'd rather not have the world hear my mistakes. When I began to take lessons again a few months ago, it was my seventh or eighth lesson before I'd plug into an amp during the lesson. It's been more than 40 years since I held a guitar and it hasn't come back to me gracefully or easily...it's just a lot more fun than I had expected.

Yeth, I am talking the internal operating temperature on the heater, not the external.temp the glass envelope reaches. Glass just gets hot enough to singe your finger :)

Actually 800 is low the early tubes ran closer to 2000 deg, it has come down as better methods of throwing electrons were discovered.

The standby is just used to warm up the tubes before you throw the high voltage to 'em. And upon shutdown, to more gradually cool the tubes down. This is supposed to prolong the life of the tubes. Whether it does or not, that's been discussed countless times, even on this forum. I don't know if it actually helps, but it seems to make sense. It's a habit for me; I always do it.

Ha Ha I thought so. :D I'm glad you cleared that up. It might scare some of the newbie tube guys.

I always turn my hot rod dlx and blues deville 410 on with the standby switch on. I let it stay on for quite a while if I am at a gig. When I plug and unplug I put the standby on. Just before turning off, I put on the standy for a few seconds than turn the amp off. So far so good. My Hot Rod dlx was pretty hot the other night, didn't need the volume up past two at the gig and no need to mic through the PA. It was loud enough.
