Aside from the obvious, can anyone see any problems with this? I love the new Vibrolux and I have an opportunity to get one at a great price.. I just don't like the 10'' speakers that much so I thought maybe I could put a 15" in there like the old one.

I know that it'll fit so I was thinking that a nice piece of baltic birch with a 15" hole in it would be all that I need to do to the front of the amp. Does anyone see an issue with ohms and such (I'm not much good at electrical stuff)

Sounds like a sweet project. The only thing to make sure of is to match the impedance (I think the stock setup is 4ohms and there is a jack for an additional 4ohm cab... don't take my word for it though), and also the power rating. You want something that can handle the power but can also be driven properly. I'm still kicking myself for not buying one of the 64 Vibroverb combos that the Fender Custom Shop put out a few years ago. They weren't cheap then, and they seem to have become next to impossible to find at this point.

The CVR wants to see a total impedance load of 4Ω. Thus, you should look for a 15-inch driver with the correct voice coil. A good choice might be the Eminence Commonwealth 15. It's FMIC's specified speaker in the TRRI "Custom 15", the Steel King, and (IIRC) was used for a time in the '64 Vibroverb re-issue. It's built similar to the JBL D-130F, with a 4-inch edge-wound aluminum-ribbon voice coil, cast alloy frame, and a 109 oz ceramic magnet structure. It's the only 15 I know of with a 4Ω impedance.

I have a 15" D-130F mated to a Deluxe Reverb re-issue in a custom blonde cab......it pumped some serious testosterone into that 22-watt chassis.

Good luck

Just wondering if that 15" cab is open or closed? One of the only worthwhile Crate products I ever played through was a single 15" closed back cab from the original "Vintage Club" series (not to be confused with the current run). If I remember correctly, it was a 16 ohm load, which made it a nice mate for my Portaflex. Probably the only amp I use for both guitar and bass.

Sweet setup. As we speak I have an American Hardtail Strat in transit to my house. Same finish... I'm guessing that's the semi transparent white over ash? Great looking guitar!
