I love my Hot Rod Deluxe. I bought the limited brown tolex with the jensen... was thrilled.. but the were definite cons.. so we converted it to a head and 2x12 cab. I am much more satisfied now that we have and I have even gotten to do quite abit of circuit modifying on it too so it really is the best sounding amp I have ever owned at this point. :D

Converting to a head will get rid of any tube rattle that's for sure. Be careful modding it. The circuit board in not that great of quality. The traces can lift very easily. I'm glad you like it now.

:) Yea the circuit board is definitely the amp's downfall.. I have done several repairs to it already. It has proven to be a hassle at times, but the end result was definitely worth it. I would like to find a mercury mag. transformer though for the final touch mod. What I like the most about it being a head is that the tubes will get more air. This is good because of how long I tend to play everyday.

It's not their best amp by a long shot. It's their best selling amp because of its price point. If you think its their best amp, you need to try the Bassman RI, Deluxe Reverb, Princeton, Super Sonic, Twin Reverb and any vintage Fender amp. I have a HRDlx and actually my 74 Champ has better tone through a 2x10 or 1x12 cabinet.

+ 1 on the Bassman.I have a blues jr, then i bought a BDRI not too long ago. While i like the bjr and the bdri (they are good sounding amps), there is no comparison to the Bassman. It sounds incredible. Its all i want to play anymore.

Most of the lower cost amps are built the same way. They don't sound bad, they're just not built well or use quality components.

It all depends what "sound" you are looking for...! If you want a pure clean sound the Hot Rod Deluxe is at the top of the heap in my opinion! I don't play with the "drive" channels and this amp blows the lid of any other Fender amp in this respect...it may not be a metal players dream amp but for those who love a clean sound it is REAL hard to do better...

You really need to try a Super Reverb. If you want clean tone any of the blackface amps (Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb and Twin Reverb). This is what all clean fender amps are measured by,honestly.

I have heard all these amps in the sixties when they came out and now in this time frame...How do you like the hissing of the amps that you listed? I love a quiet amp with a great clean sound and a pure reverb, but that's just me...The Hot Rod Deluxe has the "tone" I am looking for...it may have it's drawbacks, but I am willing to put up with these in order to get that sound that I like! :P

Actually i had a HR and now i have a bjr, bdri and a 59 Bassman ri and none of them hiss at all.I have tried the DRRI and it doesnt hiss any more than any other amp.I had an older blues jr that hissed , but it had some bad solder joints. As far as the reverb goes, you cant get any purer than the blackface amps. The hrs reverb is nothing special and some people consider it pretty weak in comparison. But in the day , if its what you are looking for ,then thats all that matters.

I just tried out a Custom Vibrolux yesterday and have listened to many Twins and the like and they all "Hiss" and are noisy...

My Blues Jr is quiet as well at the HR Deluxe, I don't know why, I just know from my experience with these amps...

and your right, in the end it is all about what you are happy with...what makes me smile is that no matter what brand of guitar you play, Fender amps seem to be the top choice for alot of musicians out there...

I've never had a Blackface or Silverface Fender amp that hissed excessively. You really need to play more amps before making a statement like that. The HRDlx is a low end tube amp. I know I own one. I'll sell you mine if you love them that much. It also does not have anywhere near the clean of a Blackface. My 76 Twin has absolutely no hiss what so ever and is clean till deafening levels. I can't speak for the new amps though. I know the power supply caps are pretty cheap in them. That could cause some hiss. I'm glad I kept some of my "vintage amps".
