Ok....first maybe a little information..... whats the difference between:

12AX7
ECC83
7025
they all fit my amp but...are they all the same but different ....or what??

I currently run the GT-ECC83.....very "gainy"...kinda harsh but loud & clear.....has any CYBER-TWIN users experemented with various tubes.....I've reviewed GROOVE-TUBES site & looked at TUBE DEPOT....lots of good info but still confused on what choice.

i guess i'm trying to "warm" up my amp( soften)...but would miss my current feedback...actually..its a bit much.....If you have an opinion about tubes in general i'm listining but if you have experiance with tubes & a CYBER i'd would love to hear....

thx!

Hey

I'll went through my little tube collection and I have some tubes that say 12AX7/ECC83 on them so I think there the same.... don't know about a 7025 though... I warmed up my Cyber Twin by using a 12AX7NOS the factory tubes were 12AX7WC which were a little bright in my opinion....

You might check out Fendertalk.com forum they have a Cyber Twin forum just for all us Cyber Twiners....

Hope this helps....Jake

Hello Redwine Rocker,

When my CT SE was new, the sound seemed a bit 'harsh' to me. So, I tried two GT 12AX7-M (Groove Tubes Mullard reissue) At the time, I thought they sounded maybe just 'a little' warmer. This could have been wishful thinking, since I was trying to justify there higher price tag. The reason I say that is - a year, maybe two, later, I switched back to the original GTs that came in it and could not hear any difference.

What I think was the biggest factor in getting rid of the 'harsh' sound was probably the speakers getting loosened up, or broke in, and just everything about the amp getting 'settled in'.

The speakers are pretty stiff when new.

As for the difference between the tubes you listed;
Some have told me that those are just different designations for the same tube. Example: On Fenders schematics for some of the old amps, it shows the preamp tubes as a "7025", or some such number. But a GT 12AX7 is used as a direct replacement, as being the same. I have seen the the same thing with the ECC designation on UK amp schematics.

If you want to add to the confusion - there's the thing claimed that two 12AX7 tubes can have a difference in the sound produced when switched out - or so the hype says.(i.e. what I tried above) And that's just in the 12AX7 designation. Some will swear on a bible, on their death bed, that the tubes with a "ECC" printed on the side will "always" be warmer, smoother sounding. Personally - I think a lot of the claims made about tubes need to be taken with a BIG grain of salt. It's a lot like the snake oil elixir salesman. (can you say "big, fat, lies"? )

If you want to speed up the break-in process of the speakers, I followed the directions I found on the Celestion web site for breaking in their speakers.

From memory (but it would be better to check their site) - it was basically to play a very bass heavy sound, at a high volume, through the speakers for a period of time. (I think it may have been 30 minutes minimum) Around here, that is best done during the evening hours when no one in the neighborhood is trying to sleep. ;) Oh yeah .... wear some ear plugs too. You're gonna need them.

Thanks rhollow!.....after a little research: ECC = European high gain loud & clear / 7025 was just a "Fender" thing that was stopped-same as a 12ax7...just Fender putting their own number on it for resale / 12AX7 is the answer....and the Mullard thing is of interest....considered a quality tube.

Now the speaker break in.....thats good advice & makes sense to me.....although these CELSETIONS are bad boys & i would think they would be broke in by now(4 months)....i don't play very "bassey" so i will try that....

PS: As far as ear plugs....everyone in the band is wearing them....except me......did i mention i play a CYBER-TWIN-SE !!!?? ROCK-OUT!....4,5 or 6?

I went here and got these-

https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.ph ... gory_id=61

Although I had a problem with them in my cybertwin which I'll explain, these tubes sound awesome to me. Coming from the stock tubes in my CT, they are wonderfully warm- much more to my liking. Why I needed to switch out to something was because one of the stock tubes was rattling pretty bad. It was time for a switch. The problem I encountered with JJ's was they are a little too powerful, too much amperage, for my CT. After speaking to JJ, he's pretty sure this is the problem and it's not the tubes, but another component in my amp that's working a bit under spec and actually causing the issue. What happens is when the amp warms up after 20 minutes or so, I get a nasty malfunctioning distortion. This is not typical of these tubes in CT's, hense why they are billed as CT replacements. It's isolated to my amp. You would most likely have no problems.

The interseting thing is that the combination- one of my original fender tubes [the one that doesn't rattle] and one of JJ's tubes is perfect. My amp likes it power wise and I LOVE it sound wise. I get the brightness of the fender tube and the warmth of JJ's tube and for me, it's killer. The biggest drag in all of it is dropping out the amp guts to work with the tubes. Lots of screws and it's fiddly to get back in place. After about ten times, it gets easier. LOL!

I recommed eurotubes highly as a source. Read their site and check out JJ's CT replacement set. They sound awesome and they're short bucks too.

Btw- you can also clean up some potential slop by leaving off the tube covers. I use my amp almost always on the road, so I got parinoid about leaving the covers off and put them back on. But depending on your situation, you could try it and see. It cleaned up the tone more- not in a huge way, but noticeable- without the covers on.
