Hello,

I am considering getting a hot rod deluxe with a special edition jensen speaker. Does anybody know how these compare to the standard hot rods? And what are the differences in sound?

Also, exactly how loud can these amps go? For example, if i was playing with a loud drummer in a smallish room, roughly how loud would I have to crank the amp? And what are the limits for gigging, venue wise?

Cheers,

Steve.

Well, i cant tell you the difference in the amps but i can answer your second question. :D All you ever really need is at least 30w of tube power. Ive played my classic 30 with a drummer and bassist and it cuts through the mix really well. A 30w tube amp is equally as powerful as a 100w ss amp. The Hotrod i beleive is 40w so the highest you would ever have to crank it is probably like 4 or so. For live performance if you crank the amp and mic it....and you should be fine.

It just depends on the band, the venue and the type of music you play. I have a HRDlx, and I've never had it below 4 in most situations. I usually run it about 6 and control it with the guitars volume control. I also have a 100 watt Twin that I use at outdoor festivals and large venues.

The HRDlx gets loud really fast, around 4-6 and doesn't really get much louder after that. personally I would get a Deluxe Reverb Reissue before a Hot Rod, it sounds much better and is way more reliable for gigging.

Iv'e been gigging for several years now and I have owned the HRD with the jensen for as long as I have played electric guitar. I love it. It is ideal for a band type setting because it is mega loud. the bricks on my house vibrate when the amp is turned up to 5 on the clean channel. It is a great tube amp. It, like every other amp, has its setbacks, but it has more than enough volume for any venue... the biggest problem however.. is that when you have the volume low, say you want to mic the amp at a gig, when the volumes low to prevent overtones, you loose much of the tone/ warmth. The power tubes can't saturate like they would at higher volumes. An attenuator from the amp output to the speaker would help this, but they are expensive.

If you are talking about the HRDlx Laquered Tweed with the Jensen P12N, it's the sweetest sounding HRD I've ever played. The Jensen P12N works geat with it. I have also heard a big difference with tube changes, too. The cleanest ( most headroom) was with Sovtec wxts, the Stock tubes, and I don't remember which ones they were, broke up a little earlier.

Seems a lot of folks don't like the P12N reissue, but it has worked great for me in a HRDlx. Sounds great with a Crate Palomino 30 watt head, too.
