I have a Hot Rod Deluxe White Lightning that I bought about 1 year ago. The amp is great--looks hot--sweet sound. Now I bought this amp off of a friend who has a lot of really nice tube amps( Kingsleys, Mesa, DrZ) who called me and stated that I would really like this amp for some blues and clean tones. That was just what I was looking for and so I purchased it for a really good price.

Now I was in a band for about a year and got this amp about half way through because I was playing a Vox hybrid. I had a friend play it for the first practice and it was going awesome for about 3 hours. Then out of no where the amp started to get bassy. I thought it was the tubes so I had them checked and the guy said the preamp tubes were low. I ended up replacing all the tubes power and pre but the amp still gets bassy after about 5 mins of playing. I love the sound it gets right when I turn it on it is just inspiring, but once it goes to the bassy low note side it gets really muddy and soggy so I really start to lose interest. I am just wondering if anyone has had this same problem and if there are any answers out there that can point me in the right direction. [/b]

Try it with a different speaker cabinet just to rule out the speaker. Was the bias checked if you replaced the power tubes?

I don't know if i am doing this right lol, but I did try this with a two Twelve 8 Ohm Cab which is what the One twelve is and it still went bassy after about 2 or 3 mins. My friend thought it was the speaker also, but after we tried just the speaker cab he biased the amp according to the unofficial Hot Rod website. He used my meter and set it to the specifications fender calls for. I will say it helped for a longer amount of good sound but it still fell back on the bassy side. I have heard that sometimes even tubes bought at Guitar Center and others can still be bad, but I would hate to think that I spent 120 buck for a retube and they were still bad. This amp is so cool and I sure hope that someone has some ideas about what is going on.

Why so much for the tubes. I paid 65 bucks for a whole set of JJ's from Eurotubes. Did you buy Groove Tubes? I know they're pretty overpriced. They sound great. Sounds like it tech time my friend. It could be a cap or something in the tone circuit going south.

Unfortunately I figured that was going to be the case. And where did you grab those tubes from, I did buy groove tubes because I thought they were the best at short notice from GC.? I am new to the tube amp thing and have not really had the priviledge of checking out the sound different tubes offer, but, I am heading in that direction. Thanks for the help...

I never liked Groove Tubes. They're overpriced too and a bunch of hype. I got the JJ's from
http://www.eurotubes.com I've been using them for years. Eurotubes sells complete sets. They also have biasing videos on their site.
