I'm saving up to buy an american standard strat, and I'm curious to find out if there is anything justifying Fender's price increase. Guitar Center is keeping '08 prices until April 1st, and I want to find out if there are any changes to the '09 models that warrant a $300 increase. Otherwise, I'll buy one now to "save" $300.

Thanks.

No changes.Fender guitars have been cheaper for a long time.If you look at gibsons you will see what i mean.Their reasoning is the cost to produce their product has increased with labor rates and material costs going up ,so the price is going up.Is it fair?I dont really know, but i have seen prices going up ingroceries and building materials.

My advice is to get it now before GC increases the price.

It's a cash grab.

Reduced sales due to the economic downturn these days means less revenue means Fender raised the price to keep the cash coming in from the fewer sales that do happen. The same thing is happening all over the world and in all kinds of industries and markets. It's the strangest thing. In a recession prices traditionally drop as a measure to encourage sales but this recession is somehow different. Food prices, gas prices (compared to price of oil), everything is going up.

So how many places are you going to post this question? One is plenty...

Amp Forum should have been posted in the Strat forum :)
And ya, another iteration of the price has gone up thread. :)

No matter :) In any case I'd be heading out to get one ASAP before they jack up the price to match the other shops!

Being you posted a guitar question in the amp forum, are we to assume that Guitar Center is selling at '08 prices on all Fender amps as well? Also, how do you receive the '08 prices, their website is showing the new '09 prices with no mention of any sale until April 1st?

You have to go in-store. The prices online are not the same. The two G.C.s near me still have a lot of stuff at the old prices. :D

Not that I know of. It just has to be old stock still in the store. As it sells out and gets replaced the prices are going up to the 2009 level.

As much as I like Fender, It's hard for me to compare a Gibson guitar to a bolt together Fender. There is much more hand work in a set neck guitar. Even Gibson's Melody Maker has a neck that is rough cut and finished by hand. Fender is much more automated. The American workers might be making some cash, but do you think the wages are the same in Mexico?
I only have one Gibson so I'm far from a Gibson guy. I have more Fender guitars. You can still get an Gibson made by American workers for well under a grand. We are paying for all the tooling for the zillion different models Fender has. Tooling is outrageously expensive.

BMW-KTM is pretty much correct. Deflation usually occurs during a recession to encourage sales, but and some may disagree, you don't need a new guitar to survive like you do oil, food, a roof over your head etc. You can't blame the price of fuel right now because it's less than half the price it was a little while ago.

Fact is either deal with it or look elsewhere. That's what I'm doing till all this blows over. You may be surprised that there are guitars besides Strats in the world.

My personal feeling is Fender is either price gouging or trying to make up for an inefficient management. Bottom line is this for me, when Fender starts taking a little more pride in what they build, and quit shipping instruments with crooked bridges and control covers, miscut nuts, flawed finishes, misaligned necks, etc., which basically boils down to sloppy workmanship, perhaps then a modest price increase would be easier to accept. The same goes for their amps. So until then, thanks but no thanks. The recent 30% + increase for what they are currently offering is insane.
Actually as far as their guitars go, i think their workmanship and quality have improved greatly.Even their MIM and their Squire line are pretty good.Unless i am missing something.
