I would like to change out the power tubes in my SCXD. What does "soft, medium, or hard duet" mean? What might be in there now? The tubes in mine are a Fender 12ax7, and a couple of EH 6v6's. I am going to put a Jan 12ax7, and Tung-sol 6V6's.
There is something of a hard edge to the sound that I am wondering if I could dial out with this duet thing?? Don't know what I am doing, and can't seem to find the info with multitudinous searches....
Any help would be VERY appreciated!

My SCXD was a floor model at GC, got it for $279 last week. So, I think the speaker is probably well broken in...

12ax7 is a pre-amp tube, can be changed anytime to try other tubes.
Changing the power tubes 6v6 in your case probably needs to have the amp re-biased by a tech. (I am making a guess the scxd can be re-biased)

Hi,
Been an electronics tech for 30+ years, and I have a good idea how to re-bias the tubes from reading around here, but have never heard the terms soft, medium or hard duet and m wondering which one might match the scxd the best????

Thanks,
Ralphmoe

I think it's something made up by Groove Tube to charge more for them.
You can get matched tubes from almost all manufacturers. Power tubes need to be biased.

Ohhh. so if you bias them the number doesn't make any difference?
The only reason I ask, is most of the places that I was looking at to buy them, you had to choose soft, medium, or hard duet.....

I'm still sure it's just a GT thing. I run JJ's and I'm real happy with them. I'm not real sure about your particular amp. www.eurotubes.com has videos on biasing. I'd only mess with them if you're unhappy with the sound.

If you are looking at Groove Tubes, they have a 3-level rating system for their tubes (seems to have something to do with how early it breaks up). Scroll down to the GT Performance Rating System:

Here's a Tung Sol 6V6, but it doesn't provide any options:

I am pretty happy with the sound, but there is a kind of a harshness to it. I had read where some people got better sound by changing them to tung-sols. There is a chance that the harshness is coming from the dsp, so I'd like to try to eliminate the tubes as a possibility.
Also, mine amp was a GC floor model, so I'd like to have new un-used tubes to start out here... I may go as far as swapping out the op-amp....Just tweeking. ;-)
Thanks to all who answered!
