Got myself a ToneMaster head. Wondering what tubes would be the best, when to re-tube, how long tubes last, if there is such thing as matched 12AX7's, if anyone has heard the 12AX7 vs. 12AT7 argument, and which 6L6's are best? I am interested in a moderate rock crunch, with a warm tone. Any and all suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Tubes can last for decades or hours, you never know. If you like the way your amp sounds, great, leave it alone. You will get a million different opinions as to what's best. It's all subjective. Some people like Groove Tubes, I personally think they're garbage, I use JJ's, right now, but in the past I used GE, RCA, Winged C's etc. It's a tonal quest that only you can satisfy. What everyone says here means nothing.

Yep what 63supro said :)

I've gone to 5751 in the preamp (v1,v2) and 12at7 in the rectifier (Edit: Whoops meant Phase Inverter! (v3) was thinking of wrong amp ) to slightly alter the way the amp responds.

I've also changed out from the groove tubes as SOVTEC is not my favorite sounding brand.

I'm currently using JJ/tesla, RCA and JAN Philips for the various tubes.

Matching preamp tubes is not the best way to go. By experiementing with different preamp tube combinations you can dial in the tone that you like. For example: I use a 12AT7 Mullard in V1 a 12ax7JJ in V2 and a Sovtek 12ax7 LPS low noise tube for the V3 phase invertor. That works for me better than all the tubes being matched. Matching is for power tubes only. Balanced tubes also are not necessary either. Your ears will tell you what sound YOU are happy with. So get yourself a few different tubes and try them in each position. Do yourself a favor and look into what others are saying and also some of the tube vendors have reviews.
