Hi guys,
I'm looking for some advice, with regard to getting my nephew in Va a new amp. He's 18 and plays a MIM Strat, according to my bro he plays it very well. My bro and I have been talking, and I've decided to get him a new amp. I'm looking at the $500 - $650 range, I don't have much of an idea what a decent amp will cost in the states. So I'd be extremely grateful for any pointers, thanks in advance guys.

Blues Jr will run about $575 before taxes. SuperChamp (I love it) will run about $400.

You might be able to pick up something used like a Twin in that price range.

Howdy Snowy72,

You can get some good deals in that price range. One I stumbled upon was a Traynor. Two channels that sound good, reverb, boost and footswitch. Full lifetime warranty as well.

Traynor YCV40

I must say the Super Champ XD has been a pleasant surprise to my ears. I bought it before the price change at $300. It's now around $330 I believe. This amp covers everything from super clean, to a nice overdriven british type amp, to all out thrash. Don't you have one Snowy? That's my vote.

I just got a Super Champ XD on Feb 27 for $329 - it is now $398 at the site. In fact it appears to be $398/399 everywhere, except when you can find a scratch-and-dent, or a sale.

I would recommend the SCXD - it's a great little amp - nice tone, nice voices, pretty good effects - and if you don't like the stock speaker (which I do), you could always change it out.

Hi Snowy, I'll say Blues Junior. I have the tolex one and I am very happy with it. But if the young lad is looking for his sound and like to experiment without a lot of pedals, then I would consider a Super Champ XD. What style(s) does he play?

Claude.

A real toss up. A SCXD sounds terrific and you have the option of multiple voices ( models of different amps many of which sound great.) You can't go wrong with either one.

I think I'd go with the Blues Jr. too if he wants a brand new one. You don't want someone else's headache with a used one (If you know what I mean?) A new one has a warranty! A plus for me. If you could find a used one from someone you can trust you might get more amp for the money.
Good luck Snowy, I hope he gets a good deal! :)

How much is that Texas Red Blues Jr. ?
