Yeah, but for the premium price and all the hype, they should be a lot closer.
Tubes used to be so much better years ago. I've had RCA 6V6's go 20 years with no problem and no perceivable change in performance.

Hello All, Mmmm, I just bought my SCXD two months ago and it's got GT[Groove Tube] 6V6C tubes in it. Regards, G.G.

I believe all Fender amps come with GT's. Fender owns Groove Tubes. The question was about needing to re-bias after a power tube change. Most old tube amp guys like myself recommend it and also trying other brands of tubes.

All the Champ 600's I've played came with EHX. Thats always puzzled me, anyone know why?

Hey GG those are Chinese manufactured and may give you good service and sound good for years. Tubes are a crap-shoot. If they do fail, I would consider some NOS 6V6 tubes and a NOS phase inverter tube for your amp. That Gretsch deserves it ,and would be lifers for that amp. A friend of mine has a '65 Tenneseean(sp?), I make him get it out and let me play it whenever i visit. Big neck and big beautiful sounds! Art

Probably cheaper than the GT's. The tubes are probably the second most expensive components in the amp.

i been repairing electronics including tube radios and amps for quite a bit now. i figgure prob true that if you use the same brand tube that came with the amp (say groove tubes) you prob not have to worry about the bias too much but, if you install diffrent manufactures tube, you should check and readjust the bias for that tube. tubes are a bit complicated you have to factor on things like interelectrode capacitences and electrode spacing and gain and such. which could effect the bias circuit. personally, anytime i replace tubes be it in my linear amplifiers or guitar amps or my shortwave reciever, even if same brand i take time to check the bias and adjust if necessary. as for safty, if you are not experienced with tube circuitry, i suggest you take it to tech cos you have some serouis voltage on them tubes especially the plate circuit prob around 800 volts or even more. (i never measured plate voltage on my 65 ri its still new lol) but, if the bias is off, it can shorten tube life drastically depending how far off it is. also in closing, you have the power capacitors that store the plate voltage. you get a hand across one of those, you will know it. be careful and good luck.

I emailed Fender direct about the biasing thing and they said:

Quote:
There is no need to rebias as long as you replace with Fender Groove tubes which come standard in the amp. A change to a different brand will require the amp to be rebiased.
