Hey Ladies and Gents!! Got myself a beautiful ToneMaster head and 4x12 cab. Wondering what tubes would be the best, when to re-tube, how long tubes last, if there is such thing as matched 12AX7's, if anyone has heard the 12AX7 vs. 12AT7 argument, and which 6L6's are best? I am interested in a rich warm tone, along the lines of what Mike Einzinger from Incubus had on 'Make Yourslef' and 'Morning View' A moderate rock crunch, with a warm tone. I play a Les Paul Studio through my ToneMaster. Any and all suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

~Stephen

In my 40 years playing, I've heard over and over that you should change tubes every year or so, depending on how often you play the amp, how hard you run it, (loudness), blah blah blah. I bought a '64 Super Reverb back in 1990 that had its original tubes still in there and it sounded great. I've been playing my Tone-Master with its original Fender-branded Groove Tubes since it was new in '94. They're still excellent and being expensive to replace, I'll just play on. Now, some guys won't go to a gig without spares, but they need pretty careful handling and I'm just one who doesn't care to carry $120 worth of tubes around just in case. Fender amps, as we all know, are notoriously dependable, and I've always taken mine to the gig without a backup. Call me crazy, but that's just the way I roll!...
