I have both types tube and solid state , and voted for all three types :)
My tube amp is primarily for playing guitar, solid state for practice and transistor for PA.

I'm making a distinction between the modern solid state like my Roland Cube and my ancient Traynor amp that has power transistors that are bigger than many tubes and the bread board inside is all discrete point wired components similar to the tube amps of the day. :)

By voting other, I am liking what I'm seeing in the new cybertwin which seem to be a hybrid of some kind.

You can never have enough guitars or amps!

I had a Marshall MG 15 Watt for years. Then this summer I got a Blues Deluxe Reissue. I'm amazed by the difference. Tube is definitely the way to go. However, I would like to get a Fender Eighty Five sometime, just to mess around with it.

No matter what others say I will use a hand-wired tube amp any day over a stamped ss!! No matter how much they've improved! :?

Stick in some high quality tubes, you'll never turn back.

Tubes. I do use a small ss for travel, but that is necessity not preference.

In the best of all possible results, the answer would be tubes.

But as in all things, life, ie, a budget, gets in the way.

I currently have 3 electric guitars and I only play in my bedroom or around my property. I'm retired and only have a limited amount to devote to my music.

So I have:

1) A computer with a Line6 Toneport KB37 midi keyboard/audio-interface to connect a guitar to my computer. A pair of powered monitors - 18w per channel, all solid state. It sounds OK, and the software can emulate many different amps, cabs, effects, etc.

2) A VOX DA-5 .5w/1w/5w Solid State Portable Amp - it's very nice and has some nice tones and I can take it everywhere - so if I want to play under a tree up on the hill, I can.

3) A new Fender Super Champ XD 15w Amp - it's a hybrid, a solid state front-end married to a power amp with a nice 10" speaker. It wins as my best amp so far. The sound is wonderful, and it sustains notes so well. :P

I have my eyes and ears open to an all tube solution - but again my budget precludes that at the moment. The new Deluxe VM and Band-Master VM sound great and might be my next amp purchase - but it will be awhile. Plus I don't really need 40w at the moment - so maybe some other amp will appear in my future.

Only time will tell.
