Hey everyone,

just a basic question,

is changing the tubes on the superchamp xd just a matter of pulling out whats there and replacing them with other compatible tubes the pre amp and the main 2 tubes?

also, if you can recommend replacement tubes that would be helpful.

thanks

Roy

I tried several brands and found that a pair of Tungsols that I had laying around made a huge difference. It made the amp sound warmer and bigger. String separation was a lot clearer. So then a buddy of mine ordered a pair to try in his and he found the same thing.

From scanning this board over the year, it appears that Fender has put a variety of tube manufacturers in the SCXD. The one I purchased March 08 had (note past tense) a "Fender" labelled 12AX7 that was the Silver Series Groove Tube version of this (translation, chop off $10):

...Plus the "Fender/Groove Tube" labelled set of power tubes of this:

My "Fender 12AX7" went bad in 5 months (and I am not using the amp but for home practice), and I replaced with this:

The amp seems marginally better with this JJ tube. More.....Um....Fender Chimey. Nevertheless, I love the sound. I tried the following tube, but it was too harsh and (dare I say it) accurate with the Strat. It seemed louder though. But no real nuance. You might want that, though:

Now a very respected board member in here, Mr Bill, has a couple of SCXD amps. He has modified them, and is convinced (if I might paraphrase) that a tube change is less dramatic to tone change than a speaker swap. Maybe he will read my inaccurate reporting and opt in with the accurate info.

I'm not sure I helped here, but it sure was fun to opine. Thank You!
