I have a MXR stereo chorus, which has 2 outputs. I hooked up one output to the 'Normal' channel (input 1) and the other to the 'Vibrato' channel (input 1). Just to see what would happen I guess. (Please note that i'm NOT using the chorus effect of the pedal at this point - it's being bypassed, i'm just using it purely as a line splitter.)

What I found was, if I set each channel to the EXACT same volume and EQ, I got a weird 'out of phase' type effect. And, If I adjust one of the channel volumes back and forth close to the setting of the other channel, I get a subtle modulation effect, and when the two become 'synched' there appears to be a slight drop in volume.

Then I tried a jump lead to connect each channel, and while the effect was similar, it didn't seem as pronounced. Heck, I even tried the jump lead AND both inputs at once just for kicks.

So, my 3 questions are...

1. What's going on here? (ie - why the 'out-of-phase' like sound)

2. Is the jump lead thing the same as the dual inputs thing?

3. Is it safe?

I like the sound, don't get me wrong, I think it has it's uses, I just wanted some clarification on it.

Thanks!

PS - My first post, so be nice!

Sorry I can't help you with your question. I was thinking of doing the same thing myself so I'll see what one of our amp gurus tell you.
I also wanted to welcome you to the forum my friend!! :)

Something like your problem was discussed on www.thefenderforum.com
The guys there are real technical and would probably know the answer.

Years ago I used to daisy chain amps together by plugging my guitar in the first input and running a patch cord from the 2nd input of the same channel the the first input of the second amp. I ran my Bandmaster and Sunn full stack like that. But never in the same amp.
The guys on the other forum build and repair amps. Give them a try, they're pretty friendly are are really willing to help. Ask your question and check back. Remember they come from different areas and time zones from all over the world.

The guys here are not quite as technical including myself. I know some basic repair and diagnostic stuff but that's it. No offense meant to anyone. Just an observation. :D

Congratulations! You've found out through the experimental process that the two channels on a Deluxe Reverb are out of phase. You win the door prize! Seriously, that's exactly what is happening when you plug into both channels with the same signal at the same level- you get massive phase cancellation.

It won't hurt your amp at all. If you want to jump channels like that, you have to buy or build your own cable that will flip the phase of one of the channels, if you want to send identical signals to both channels.

The question really is, why would you want to do that in the first place? The Deluxe Reverb is a mono amp, not stereo. Whatever you put into it, whether it's mono or stereo, comes out mono. I'm sure if you use one of the outputs of the chorus(probably marked 'mono'), you'll get the full signal, but without the stereo effect and it'll sound just fine.

If you want true stereo effects, you have to use a stereo amp with two speakers or two amps to make it work. Hope this helps.

You could take advantage of the tone controls in the other channel. It could be interesting. The best thing to do is get another DR and run a stereo rig. :D
I used to do it from time to time in the 70's with a borrowed SFDR. Serious fun/serious tone.

You can also use an AB switcher to use both channels and have two different volumes and two different EQ settings (like for rythym and lead). Of course, one channel would have no reverb/vibrato... I know a guy who does this; he uses a Holy Grail Reverb. It works for him.

Wow, I'm an idiot. I just posed a question related to this. So how does one go about building a cable that will switch the phase of the signal?

From what people were saying on the HC forums, the jacks on the DRRI are all mono, which means you can't swap the tip/ring to make a regular inverting cable.
