Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but have been a guitar player and a Fender lover for 25 years. Here's what I am hoping to get some advice on:

I am interested in buying a Champ re-issue and have a few questions. I suppose one of my favorite tube sounds is Eric Clapton's on his Layla album. So, since he used a Champ on that album, I have lately wanted to buy one of the affordable re-issues, to try and get that same tone.

I have already played through a Champ--I have an MIA Standard Strat, about twenty years old, original single-coil pickups--and I like the amp. 99% of those tones are easily attained. But it does not have the same higher gain output as Clapton achieved with his setup in some various leads.

Now I know the re-issue isn't the same amp as his was, the guitar isn't, etc. My question is what sort of distortion pedal would be good to give the gain some more fuzz, as it were? I don't want to modify the amp or mess with the tubes until the warranty is expired--I know; call me paranoid--I am only wanting to get some more gain out of the amp. I have another amp I use for everything else, so the Champ will be solely for my own enjoyment and those wonderful tube tones. I played it today through a Boss Blues Driver and the result was good; but I was hoping for some varying opinions before I buy. I had one retailer suggest the Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal, but I am not familiar with pedals and don't know whether that one would be excessive for what I want to achieve, or, for that matter, if the Boss would suffice. I don't want a hailing, screaming wall of distortion, just that nice warm buzz/gain such as on that album or other stuff Clapton was doing around that time with that tone. I know there are no guarantees and nothing is often exact; but really close would be good enough. Nothing fancy or expensive, just something to produce that extra gain is enough for me.

I apologize for such a long introductory post, but I wanted to state my questions clearly in advance. If anyone has any suggestions, my thanks in advance.

why not try the digitech crossroads pedal.

From what i can tell its getting mixed reviews on the web. I'd look to spend serious time with one before i let the cash go for it. Other than that maybe a eq pedal could give you somewhere near the boost you need, if you dont fancy installing the clapton boost kit.

I thought about the Crossroads pedal, but they are hard to come by in-store, and I don't want to buy one not knowing how it's going to work with the amp.
