I am replacing the stock GT (Sovtek 6L6WXT) Fender tubes in my Pro Reverb (manufactured in 2001). Here is my wish list:

1) Ruby 6L6GCM-STR
2) SED Winged-C 6L6GC
3) TAD 6L6GC-STR
4) JJ 6L6GC

Any players and/or tonemeisters in Fenderland do a comparison of these and want to share your first hand experience?!?

It depends on what music and tone you are looking for.

Yep,
I play mostly blues and use JJ's. They sound great for what I do. All the rest of the tubes you listed are quality tubes. You would just have to try them and be sure it's biased properly.

I like Joe Satriani type leads primarily clean and melodic with slight overdrive. I like a tight bottom end with strong mids and smooth high end.
Also, Phil Keaggy melodic-type leads.

I have a goldtop Les Paul with mini-humbuckers (1978). I use the Visual Sound H2O, primarily for added delay (sometimes I add chorus).

I read some review where the TAD 6L6GC-STR had great clarity and detail, while the Ruby 6L6GCM-STR had a good amount of headroom and clarity. I may try the TAD's as I like to experience the clarity and detail.

It also depends on your amps design. You really need to experiment. What you call clean someone elsemight not. Reviews really don't help me very much. Some people even parrot what other people say because they think the other persons right. How your Pro Reverb is biased will change the sound. Buckers will dirty up a bit sooner than single coil pups. Any description of tone you will get here is purely subjective. I had a 67 that was really clean. But I have no experience with newer Pro Reverb.

If you go to www.thefenderforum.com those guys are seriously knowledgeable about tubes and tube amps. You'll probably get a wide varity of answers there too. You could also check out a Les Paul forum.

Good luck on the quest. :D

Has a review of all the power tubes. This may be helpful.
