I have been trying amps for the last few weeks and really like the Super Champ XD, Princeton Reverb Reissue, and the Deluxe Reverb Reissue. He're my problem...I'm an apartment dweller. I really don't have the option of letting a nice tube amp breath. I'd love to have one of the reverbs, but think it may be a little overkill for apartment use. I jam at friends houses, but it's never loud due to neighbors and wives. I don't do gigs.

So do you spend the bucks and go the premium reverb route or do you save the money and go with the SCXD? I know some folks have been in this boat before trying to decide. :)

Thanks!
Joe

For me, I wouldn't consider the Princeton due to the price vs the other two.

So it's between the SCXD and DRRI. Will you ever play out? Do you want included effects or do you use pedals? What's your budget?

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the response. $1000 or less is what I'm looking at. I'm cool with using my own pedals or using on-board effects. :-)

I'm trying to decide if it's worth the premium for the DRRI for example vs. the Super Champ. I have a couple solid state amps and this is my first tube.

Thanks again!
Joe

Based on the informatin given, I'd advise you get the SCXD. You'll save money, get more tonal flexibility and, at the volumes you apparently use, will never miss whatever additional "tube tone" you MIGHT get from a DRRI or Princeton.
I've been playing out for 35 years, and for the past 10-12 have used a hot rod 4x10. I recently bought a SCXD just to have something easier to tote arond for practice and jamming, and like it so much that I now run it into my HRD for gigs. Most humans will never notice that it has a digital front end and reverb, and it's great to have several useful amp sounds and effects available without hauling around effect boxes and patch cords....
Bottom line: either is a fine amp, but save your money.
If it'll make you feel better, of course, you can buy the SCXD and send me 1/2 the money you save...
Good luck,
ST

+1 SCXD. I've been playing for many years and feel the same as fstempleton; the SCXD is the bomb! I've got 6 other amps some of which are worth $1000's, but the SCXD sits in my studio for all my practice, and I'm using it for small gigs too. I've replaced the stock speaker with a Rajun Cajun for more volume at gigs, but the stock speaker sounds better if you don't need the volume increase.

It's really a great amp, especially for the money. Get the amp, footswitch and cover, and you'll still have enough money to buy a nice MIM Strat or Tele, compared the the DRRI!

If you're not in a rush, you might also want to wait until you can try out one of the new Deluxe VM combos. I'm still inclined to suggest that the SCXD is probably a better choice for apartment living and the playing you describe, but it's nice to check out all the available options.

I've had numerous amp includin the Deluxe Reverb reissue and the SCXD. I don't gig anymore and use the SCXD for recording and practicing. It is TERRIFIC. The clean channel is awesome and the voices are excellent plus you get the effects. (I just wish the reverb was a separate effect). It can get loud but you can get good dynamics even at lower volumes. It is perfect for an apartment or condo. You should get the footswitch as well.

Just curious ,have you considered the Blues Jr? It has nicer tone than the SCXD and it is within your price range. It is 15 watts and has a master volume which might make it a little easier to tame than the SCXD.

I think it depends on what "nicer" means. I think the Blues Jr sounds good when you when you plug in and turn it up loud. I could never get rid of the boxiness. It's muddier in the midrange; I know I had two, one with Billm mods, a Swamp Thang and MM transformer. I sold both. BTW, you can get really close to the Blues Jr sound with SCXD Chan 2 voice 2&3. A/B them, you'll see.

I'm in the same situation as you and went with the SCXD. Saved some cash for other things and my neighbors don't hate me. :D

Have tried the SCXD and it kinda gets close to the Bjr,the warmth isnt quite there. There is the boxiness due to the smaller cabinet ,but to my ears anyway the bjr has better tone. There isnt really many options at lower watts.I have a bjr and a blues deluxe ,but since i dont have an apartment it isnt a problem.

BravoFoxtrot: You should listen to this. I own & love the SCXD, but have never played the BJ. And the stock speaker in the SCXD is very toneful:

gtrman100: Does the Tweed Channel 2&3 really sound like a Blues Jr (6V6 vs EL84)? Not the Hot Rod Channels 10-12 (6L6)? If so, then I would love the Blues Jr, because Ch 2&3 are excellent. Then again, the FX on the SCXD really do expand possibilities. They are more fun than should be allowed. With a BJ, you would need lots of pedals.

As a condo dweller, I was in the same situation. I didn't need or want the extra watts or two channels so I went with the VCXD and saved even more money.

I was in the same situation. I live in an apartment and I bought all the amps you mentioned plus the blues jr. In the end I kept the Deluxe Reverb. I think the way to look at it is this... if your looking for an amp to last a lifetime then get the Deluxe Reverb. It's the best sounding of all the amps and the speaker/cabinet really provides a full sound that doesn't sound boxy. And you can still find these used for good prices. I'd get one now before the used prices catch up with the new prices. However, if your looking for just a practice amp that may not be your main amp in the future then I would get a SCXD because of it's size and versatility. THe SCXD was a good amp, but it had a little more compression in the sound that you just can't get rid of. THe Deluxe Reverb's compression was perfect to me. The Blues Jr was a little too boxy and midrangy for my taste. The PRRI sounded good and the effects were the best of all of them, but next to the deluxe reverb, the deluxe reverb was a better value and sounded better too...

I A/Bed them side by side and could get very close with the Tweed Channels 1-3 on the SCXD. Was it exactly, no, of course not. But if you're looking for a Tweed flavor, I think it sounds good. I don't think the Hot Rod channels 10-12 sound anything like a Bjr. They're much brighter and have much more gain. They're just ok in my book, I prefer the Tweed channels 1-3, and 8 better.

I sold my Bjr's because I'm looking for a more Blackface toned amp. The extra channels and effects are just icing on the cake. I think it's a close to perfect bedroom/apartment amp.
