I have a Pro Jr. (Tweed) that I have been fooling around with lately. I'm mainly playing a Telecaster through it, but do also play a Les Paul and Gretsch on occasion.

Anyway, I'd like to get some input from my fellow members here. Does anyone here use a Pro Jr and do you use any pedals with it? If so, which ones? How does it take pedals? Any recommendations for distortion or overdrive pedals?

Thanks!

Just bought one off ebay - I'll let you know how it likes my Ibanez tube screamer - when the amp arrives, that is.

The PJ loves most any kind of pedal. I use or have used Analogman TS9, Barber LTD, RC Booster, Jacques Tube Blower, Boss OD3, etc. etc.

You really can't go wrong with most any type overdrive or distortion with a PJ. Buy what you like with confidence it will be a fine match.

Thank you for the feedback.
Have you ever put a Boss FDR-1 though it? I think I might pick up a Boss delux Reverb pedal this weekend. It would be great to have the Deluxe Reverb tone through a smaller amp....

I've used lots of different pedals with the PJ, mostly OD, since I play blues and don't really need a lot of distortion.

I actually bought the FDR pedal and took it back after a week. I found the reverb almost unuseable -- you had to have it around 1, and anything over that was ultra-surf territory. I also didn't like the gain. YMMV.

I would like to try the FBM someday.

You might try a tube and speaker swap. I put in JJ's and then a Ragin Cajun speaker, and man what a difference. It's a good amp to start with, but this made it so nice even without pedals.

What kind of music do you play? What kind of guitar? I play strats.

Berv2,
Thank you for your input and feedback on the pedals.

I play a wide variety of music. Bealtes, Buddy Holly, Sex Pistols, Velvet Revolver, Social Distortion, Johnny Cash, the list goes on and on. I know, I'm all over the place. I really just think of something I like and start playing it (or I guess I should say work on learning it). Lately I'm on a 50's & 60's rock kick.

To answer your question about the guitar I play, I'm mostly playing a Tele right now, but I also have a Gibson '59 LP Standard (reissue), Gretsch hollowbody, and an Epi LP Standard. I can't seem to put the Tele down.....

Anyway, I picked up a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal a few days ago because it was really cheap. Lately I haven't been playing a lot of tunes that don't require distortion, but it is fun to mess around with. It doesn't sound bad at all through the Pro Jr, but I would really like to get an overdrive pedal. I'm thinking about a Ibanez TS-9. Have you played one of those through the PJ?

I'm getting a ds1 tomorrow, so I'm interested to see how that sounds.

I have an sd1, which is pretty cheap. However, I like it with the PJ. It is like a tube screamer with a bit more aggression.

I have a TS9-DX, which sounds great through the PJ. A tube screamer is not a heavy overdrive or distortion pedal, but is pretty mild gain. Just depends what you're looking for.

The other thing with the PJ is that it has its own natural tube overdrive, which is pretty awesome. With my tube and speaker swap, it's amazing.

You just have to experiment with your amp and your guitar, playing your music, to see what works for you.

Have you ever had a rattle or 'shaking' sound with your Pro Jr.? I get this annoying sound even at fairly low volumes (around 4). I did tighten up the speaker because I thought this was the issue, and that seemed to make a little difference, however this sound is more like a tube sound. Its hard to explain, but it sounds like a hollow rattle. Sort of sounds like the filament that is broken in a light bulb when you shake it. Any guesses what this could be? I really would like to find an amp tech in my area to go through it, as I bought it used from a local mom & pop.

Doesn't sound good, but I'm no tech. Best thing would be to take it into the real guitar guys, like you said. The Hot Rod series does tend to have some build issues -- bad soldering, loose jacks, etc. However, the PJ is worth the little bit of work you have to put into in. It's a great sounding amp!

Try plugging your amp in a different room in the house and see if you get the same rattle.

I've plugged the amp into a couple difference electrical outlets in my house, but the results (rattles/shaking noise) is the same. I've also tried the tap test on the tubes. I tapped them with a pencil and I didn't notice a difference in the sound from one tube to the next, so I assume that they are all fine (or all bad).
Hopefully I can find an amp tech in my area to diagnose and resolve the issue. Thanks to both of you for your feedback.

You are right that this is an awesome amp. I love mine.

Typically if it is a tube rattling, or going microphonic, meaning that only certain frequencies will make it vibrate on certain notes you should be able to tap on it and get the same exact sound. Could be dirty contacts in the socket, try to pull them out and put them back on?
