Is it possible to run the Blues Jr with the internal speaker and an extension cab at the same time? I see it just has the one speaker out jack.

What would be the point of using an external cab w/o the internal speaker?

You'd have to use some sort of "Y" or splitter cable to run the amp's speaker and 8 ohm ext. cab in parallel.

You could also unplug the amp's speaker, and use the amp as a head into an ext. cab. This way you can try out different speakers, or use a 2-12 or 4-12 cab (as long as the cab is 8 ohms). I believe that using the amp as a head would cut down on tube rattle/vibration, and would probably extend the life of the tubes.

Thanks.

Can anyone confirm that this is possible - running both the internal speaker and a cab with a "Y"? Would this give a fuller sound/add apparent volume for gigs?

I want to mention that you should use the correct type of "Y" cable or splitter to allow the 2 speakers to be in parallel. The problem is that using an 8 ohm ext. cab in parallel with the internal speaker will knock the impedance down to 4 ohms, and the amp really wants to see 8 ohms. Some say that this is fine and it won't hurt the amp, others say that it's okay but don't do it all of the time, and some say that you should never do this as it could cause major problems. I've personally done this (using a splitter box) a few times in the past and never had a problem. But, it was only a few times, so I won't say if it's safe or not.

The ideal way to do this would entail modding the amp (and voiding the warranty). I believe that you can get a new transformer for it that has both 4 and 8 ohm taps, and have an ext. speaker jack installed. I have no experience in amp repair/modding, so I don't know how hard/expensive this would be.

If you want more volume, replacing the stock speaker with a more efficient speaker (higher SPL) will give more perceived volume. I plan to do this eventually. For more volume and fullness, I'd suggest just using the amp as a head into an 8 ohm ext. speaker cab (2-12 or whatever) that is loaded with more efficient speakers. There's no modding involved, and you won't have to worry about possibly damaging the amp. You can use just the combo as a small grab-n-go amp for jamming, or take along the cab for when you want a bit more volume.

Of course, you could always just get a different combo amp that already has an ext. speaker jack installed by the manufacturer. Or, buy a head and different sized (1-12, 2-12, 4-12) cabinets to match your needs.

Besides cutting down on tube rattle/vibration, there is the fact that some people prefer using a closed-back cab. I do know that it's not a good idea (or safe) to seal up the back of an open-back combo, especially a tube amp!
