Hello there everyone,

I have a prob with my DeLuxe. I love the tone and everything, but I hear a ringing sound in the background as soon as I put it a little louder. It is much like a lose screw but I have no idea where it may come from. Before I open the amp it I would like to know if any of you ever had this before and how you recommend to fix it.

Thanks in Advance
Dario

Yes one of our Blues Deluxe was in the shop for over a month with them trying to find the cause.
it was never found, still does it at high volumes.

I guess you could describe ours as a tinkling buzzey sort of sound. :)

A possible cause is a microphonic tube(s).
You can test that by doing the pencil eraser tap test or swapping in new preamp tubes one at a time to see if it goes away. The power tubes need to be swapped in pairs.

Unfortunately for us it is not bad tubes, or loose components.
We've given up trying to fix it and will just have to live with it.

You didn't say which Deluxe you are talking about.
So, assuming it's a Deluxe that has a reverb pan in it - here is something I found with my '65 Deluxe Reverb ri and a Blues Junior I had years ago.

At high volumes, the sound from the back of the speaker was vibrating the reverb pan causing a noise just like you described.

My "fix" was to place a piece of cardboard over the reverb pan, between the speaker and the reverb pan. It worked for me.

To see if you have that problem, you could lay a magazine (or something similar) over the reverb tank and try it out. If it lessens, or eliminates, the noise, then you've found your problem.

If you can settle for fixing your problem very cheaply, or free, - you're in good shape.

If you don't feel right unless you spend a lot of money on it - then you will need to search for some expensive gadget that does the same job.

Hey Guys thanks a lot for replying. It infact does it at high volumes and I sure could describe it as a tinkling buzzey sort of sound. Funny enough I bought a cheap (but lovely) epiphone valve junior, to play just like that in my bedroom and... it does it too! I will have to open it and take into account both of your posts while trying out stuff. It is an hot rod deluxe by the way, I think it did it from the first moment and I am pretty sure the dealer knew about it... i'll keep you posted if I have news, thanks again. Hopefully some more help will come this way!

Interesting, as soon as the guys get back from skidooing we will try that magazine on the reverb pan idea.
If it works I might just whack the amp tech over the head with some drum sticks :)

If both amps do it, I'd start looking around the room for stuff vibrating. I had a heater vent that took me weeks to figure out that it was coming from it. I thought it was my amp. It was only when I tried some of my other amps in my music room that I figured it out.

Vibration comes surely from the amp, and both amps do it even on the street...

I have connected the Deluxe to different speakers, the ringing sound is gone!

... why do I have to work while all I want to do is play...!?

Definitely tube rattle if you put it through a different cab and it's gone.

Most problems with a tube amp can usually be traced back to the tubes - but not all. Since replacing the tubes had already been tried and did not solve the problem - was why I passed on my experiences with the reverb tank vibrating from close proximity with the speaker. And why I passed along the cardboard "fix". :)

The other cabinet that was tried by someone would have also moved the vibrations away from the reverb pan, as well as the tubes. To my way of thinking, what it proved was, it is the vibrating sound waves from the speaker that is part of the problem. If that problem is a tube or something else is still not known. (were replacement tubes already tried in that case?)

The best way I found to get away from the problems talked about in this and many other threads about tube amps is to move up to the CT SE, as I did. Since the price increase, the used market would probably be the best place to look. Mine has served me well for however many years it's been since it was introduced.

Good Luck :D
