Hey all,
I started playing after about a 10 year break. I pulled my old Blues Deluxe out of storage and the pots ALL snap crackle and pop. The volume knob is also odd. Just touching it sends everything out of whack.
Someone on another forum suggested the pots might be dirty. What can I clean them with? How can I do it without damaging the other components?
Thanks.

Hi
Glad to hear your back. Did similar thing myself.
I"m an electronics Tech and yes your pots are dried out (lubrication) and full of dust. Over the years I've tried all kinds of fixes and found that once they are scratched that's it, replace them. Take it to a GOOD tech shop and pay the bucks as it deserves the TLC. Its a great amp that will only appreciate in value. Not to mention getting your friend back.

Cheers K

Try cleaning them with contact cleaner.

Well, I should say that this amp was involved in a septic backup many moons ago and probably has little collector value as the original cab had to be scrapped. The chassis is still in great shape and though I thought the speaker had had it, it's great, too.
One day it might get a nice replacement cab. For now, it lives in a pine cabinet I built with a jigsaw and drywall screws. I may keep it in there. To me, the tone sounds fine.

As for the pots, I got some contact cleaner/lube from Radio Shack. Before I sprayed it in there, though, I just spun the pots until it felt like my hand was going to fall off. There's still a bit of scratch in a few of them, but it's nothing like it was before. If I get frustrated again, I'll spray some gunk in there carefully. I really don't play with my knobs too much once I find the sweet spot, so I may just leave it alone.

Try Deoxit. It works a lot better than anything you can get from Radio Shack.
