First question, I was dating my HRDx (bought second hand for a great price) and looked at the tubes, one side says fender and underneath that made in Russia, I thought that was strange as I assumed Groove tubes were MIA so I look at the other side of the tubes and they're Sovteks, did fender ever do a deal with Sovtek or are these aftermarket tubes?

Second question, would putting in a marshall greenback style speaker give the amp a more marshall style sound when I use distortion/overdrive?

That is correct, Fender uses GrooveTubes which are just re-branded SovTek's :)

They are good solid tubes, I suspect meant more for military applications than musical instrument usage :)

I replaced mine with a mix of JJ/Tesla, jan Philips, RCA, and Ruby; depending on which position also used different tube types :)

(not pleased with the Ruby)

Oh ok... I thought they were better tubes than standard groove ones

Nope, those probably are the original tubes.
Also if you are changing the power tubes, note the color dot on them (or it might be on the amp diagram inside the amp) You need to get a matched pair of GrooveTube power tubes with the same color marker to make sure they match the Bias in your amp.

If you go with a different brand you need to get the amp re-biased to match the new power tubes.

(does not apply to the pre-amp tubes)

As far as the speaker goes, changing it will affect the tone but how is hard to say.
Putting a greenback in will make it sound different but not like a Marshal, different amp circuits and tub sets in them things.

Here this site http://www.eminence.com/soundclips.asp
Will let you listen to the same sound source going into many different different speakers.

(the default one in the hdrlx is a "special design" Legend 125 by Eminence, unless it is a special issue amp.)

I had Sovtek 5881 power tubes in mine. They're 6l6 equivalents. They sucked and I put a set of JJ's in. It's a lot better now.

You might have issues with the Greenbacks power rating as well. The Hot Rod Deluxe is a 40 watt amp, the Greenback is rated for 25 watts. That doesn't automatically disqualify it, just be aware of it. I would lean more toward the Vintage 30 for a Marshall kind of sound, it's similar in design to the Greenback, with a higher rating, and just gives a warmer and more controlled breakup than the Greenback.

Anybody find the right preamp tube combo to tame the "more drive" channel yet?

If it is a new amp, give it about 40 hours of playing time to allow the speaker to break in. New speakers are not as flexable and may be a little harsh at first. After break in decide if the sound is right for you. I bought a Hellatone 60 for one of my amps that sounds nice at http://www.avatarspeakers.com. These are pre broke in and relabeled Vintage 30's.
