Hello All,

A few years ago I got a great deal on one of these heads. It sounded nearly the way I wanted it. I went all out and got new tubes and had the thing re-biased, etc. Since the re-biasing, there has been a slight undertone of distortion in the clean channel of the amp, not at all like the chimey clean channel that Fenders are known for. Further on down the road (ignoring the problem for financial reasons) a cyclic popping began to occurr when the amp would be out of the Stand-By position. This has seemingly gotten worse over time or at least more prominent. Even further down the road, the tone of the amp began to suffer with no definition, lack of bottom end, static, noise, you name it. On another note, my amp inherits the popping noise when changing channels. I have read that this can be caused by certain sprial filament pre tubes. At this time I am unaware of what I have installed as I have not wanted to deal with this until now. I have an old Ibanez RG550 that I was using primarily for practice but was also using a LP STD and a PRS CST24 and the same issues were taking place. What I would like to find out is the following:

1. What could the cyclic popping noise be when the amp is on without changing channels? This does occurr on both channels.
2. What tubes has anyone worked with that has supplied a good pallette of tone both clean and distorted? I do lean towards heavier gain and muscle and would prefer that in both channels. (Let me clarify, I want the clean channel CLEAN but with more depth)
3. Are there any mods that have been narrowed down to be working that eliminate the popping noise when changing channels?
4. Are there any other mods out there that would breathe perhaps additional tone into this very cool amplifier?

Thank you all for your input.

Scott
