My Pro Jr. begins breakup much sooner than I'd like. Before 4 on the vol pot. Pretty good OD sound, but I'd prefer it to stay clean longer.

Can anyone tell me whether this is a function of the amp circuit or the speaker?

I don't have any noise or hum issues.

Background. This is a new one. I have an '07 DRRI and an '08 Bj NOS to campare it to. (The Pj is just for taking with me to work). I love those amps, and run them in parallel or switch between the two via a Lehle Little Dual Amp switch pedal. Awesome)

Review; Pj is an EL84 based amp, as is the Bj, and they're both 15w.

They both use 2 EL84 Groove Tubes, 3 12AX7 Pre-amp tubes and a solid state rectifier. The Bj NOS obviously has a bigger cabinet and has more ckt control, as well as a 12" Jensen C12N rated at 50watts. The Pj is a 10" Special Design by (for) Fender (Eminance) rated at 30w.

The DRRI is a 22w 6v6 based, with 2 Groove Tubes, 4 12Ax7 Pre-amp tubes, 2 12AT7's and a 5AR4 Rectifier Tube, running through a Jensen C12K rated at 100w.

Obviously the DRRI is the Prince of clean, with some of it's bigger brothers being Kings and Dukes. (I LOVE Fender amps!!).

The Bj stays clean much higher in volume levels as well, if you choose.

I'd initially thought the issue I have with the Pj was with the speaker. Stuck a Jensen P10R in it. I hate to admit this, but I couldn't tell much difference in sound quality, and it began breakup just as soon.

I've read that typically speakers with ceramic magnets will stay cleaner higher in volume than their twins with alnicos. Interesting that the Jensens in both my other amps are ceramic. (hence the 'C' in the designator). I've also the notion that a speaker with a higher power rating seems to run cleaner longer.

I love an overdriven amp (I'm an old Rocker), but I also love clean and pure with lot's of volume. I'm very happy with the OD I get out of my Keeley modded TS-808.

I'm about to make one more attempt at a speaker, and am ready to order another Jensen, this time a ceramic, the C10Q rated at 35 watts. (Note the P10R was only rated at 25watts). Highest rated ceramic Jensen in a 10 I can find. Note also Fenders upgraded series of Blues Jr.s go from a Specially Design Fender (ceramic as well) to the Jensen ceramic I reference above. One positive I've just realized regarding this speaker and my concerns is in a quote I found in the only purchasers review on the Mf website.

In ref to the Jensen C10Q;

"...Bought it because a P10R I originally bought as a stock Fender replacement was breaking up too soon for my taste".

Interesting to remember I just tried a P10R, and it's also interesting to note the Super Reverb, one of the Kings of Clean runs 4 P10R's. (Kind of counter to the speaker notions I've been talking about).

My question remains simple, and for any who know. Is the early breakup in the Pro Jr a function of the amp ckt or the speaker?

Thank's,

Dave
