Yeah, but me through a Fender tube amp sounds way better than me through a solid state practice amp, and I bet the same would apply to SRV. Except he'd probably sound 100% better than me even if he played a through First Act.

I've found one thing that helps to get ONE of his tones is to use the neck pickup on a Strat, regardless of pickups. That gives you that real woody, open sound that he used frequently, especially when pushed with a bit of gain. But SRV had so many sounds and styles it's difficult to really pin him down. Settings that sound great of "Texas Flood" won't work well on "Couldn't Stand the Weather". I've been able to approximate his tone using a Hot Rod Deluxe, but I've also done it with a Peavey Valve King, a Marshall TSL-122, and an Epiphone Valve Jr, so take it for what it's worth. Heavy strings help, but aren't necessary. It's more in how heavy YOU play, as in heavy soul and heavy talent. Almost like trying to imitate Jeff Beck...you may get his tone, but the TECHNIQUE is a whole 'nother thing!
Stevie was one of a kind, and he is missed.
