I'm new to changing tubes and tube amps in general. I was wondering when changing the power tubes on my hot rod deluxe, do i need to release that metal clamp-like thing by the top of them?? Or, do i just pull them down, because i've been having a problem getting them to budge.

The manual really doesn't describe replacing tubes in detail and i didn't know if you even leave the back panel on, or just reach in and pull em?

any help would be appreciated. thanks =)

It will be easier to get to them if you remove the back panel, so I would recommend it, especially since you're a virgin and a bit nervous! If there are spring caps on the tubes, which I seriously doubt since I've never seen 'em on an HRDlx, you would just pull them up and off the tubes. What you probably have resemble little metal wings, a half ring on each side. Push those toward the base of the tubes slightly with one hand, while you pull the tubes straight out. Do not turn or twist the tube, but you may need to rock it SLIGHTLY back and forth to free it.
When putting in the new ones, just line up the pins and push the tube straight in, again with maybe the slightest rocking back and forth. Those "wing" clamps will naturally grab and stabilize the tubes.
Make sure you get the correct tubes, and a matched pair is always best. If you have an amp tech you're tight with have him check the bias, but if you get the correct tubes it isn't always necessary.
Hope that helps ya out.
