I have a blues jr. that I am entertaining the though of swapping out a speaker and was wondering what people found that works for them. I play straight up rock - love the cleans on the amp (sometimes a little piercing) but need a speaker that doesn't flop out with some gain. I have seen the post about swapping out a speaker (that cabinet with 2 10's? 12's? is to die for!) Anywho, anyone just used an extension cabinet? Just wondering.

I am partial to Celestions, but that is what came in the amps I have purchased in the last 10-15 years. I have no real comparison. I reconditioned my old peavey backstage with a celestion tube 10, and I like it a lot. However, it does not seem to have the tightness in the low end as my 12" 75W Celestions and vintage 30's under high gain. I love how it sounds for low to mid gain and clean stuff though. Speakers are an important part of your tone, and celestion is consistant in their delivery of good tone

I'VE GOT THE CUSTOM SHOP TWO TONE THAT WAS BASICALLY THE SAME AMP WITH A 10" AND A 12" IN THE SAME CABINET. MY AMP IS NOT THE SAME NOW TOTALLY REDONE GUTS LIKE A MATCHLESS LIGHTNING 15, BUT NEVER THE LESS STILL 15 WATTS EL84 AMP. THOSE SPEAKERS ARE THE TICKET. BIG BOTTOM END GOOD CUT FROM THE 10", YOU MIGHT LOOK INTO SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF PLACES THAT COULD BUILD YOU A CUSTOM CAB. CHECK OUT COLLINSAMPS.COM. MY AMP IS ON THERE

The speaker in a standard Bj is a Fender Special Design (Eminance).

I have a Bj NOS. Love the sound. This version uses a Jensen C12N. Doesn't fart out o me and I'm a volume addict. Both are rated at 50w.

The DRRI uses the same speaker in the 100 watt version, the C12K. Awesome amp.

I use a Keeley modded TS-808 for overdrive. Never heard better.

I've also got a Pro Jr. This has the 10" version of the Fender/Eminance you are wanting to upgrade. I just ordered the Jensen C10Q for it 30 minutes ago.

The above are all ceramic magnet speakers, which I've read tend to stay cleaner longer, when compared to the same speaker in the alnico magnet version. Whether this true, I can't say. Can only tell you I love what comes out of the front of my 12" amps.

I switch between the 2 or run them in parallel with a Lehle Little Dual Amp Switch pedal. Awesome. It has a built in isolation transformer which eliminates ground loop hum. It's kinda pricey, but worth every penny.

Would hate for you to just take my word for it though. If you're able, get to a guitar shop that has both and compare them. This'll tell you if it's what you desire and worth the $80+.

Other than the covering and the handle, the speaker is the only difference between the 2. Some guys will tell you the NOS implies the tubes and board are NOS (New, Old Stock) as well. I've confirmed with Fender that in the case of this amp, that is not true.

The Scumbacks I recommend in my previous post are Pre-Rola Celestion clones. I got to compare the Scumbacks side by side with a set of Pre-Rola's and the Scumbacks were better sounding than the originals!!!!!
