If you use a tube amp replace the 12AX7 in V-1 with a 5751. The 5751 is nicknamed the blues tube. SRV used them in his amps.

and that is where i got my username from too......

If its those guys (especially SRV) you're after, ONE amp probably won't even come close. A few years after his death I read an article in GuitarWorld about SRVs studio setup for his In Step album. He used basically a whole "wall" of amps, not all of them Fender, all mic'd and mixed differently.

I read recently that during the recording of Texas Flood, SRV used two Vibrolux amps and had minimal technical supervision during the recording. Jackson Browne had given them the space in their studio and not much else.

All of you are right on the money - tube pre-amp & tube output.
There's no bull flying around in this thread.

marshall super lead 100...

Well no one would argue Jimi didn't have great tone when he played the blues...

Fender has the best cleans though, so you'll have to experiment with different amps.

And SRV sounded like SRV no matter what type of amp or different guitars he played...

My personnel fav is a 59 Bassman. Mine is a 1990 model RI is well broken in and with a TS808 tube screamer the sound is incredable. 90% of what I play is blues and Ive gone through alot of different amps.

A great Blues rig to be sure, but I think maybe our friend doesn't have the $1,480 it would take to buy the amp and box.

I think Peterm's advice is excellent. As long as you've got enough money then get the best tube amp you can afford.

Unfortunately, I was really on a budget and did the next best thing and bought SCXD (hybrid) new for $276 minus 10% Guitar Center discount and a Fender GE-412 (used from craigslist) for $100 and I am stoked with the outcome.

SCXD is a great practice amp that gives you a good taste of tube tone for a hybrid, but falls just a bit short for gigs until you hear it in a 4X12. The sound is very large now. I will still need a pedal or two, but the onboard fx aren't that bad. So if your on a strict budget, I don't think you can do much better than that. I'm very pleased with this rig.

That being said if you watch craigslist faithfully and live in a populated county there's a good chance of picking up an all tube Fender for about the same. I just wanted to be under warranty and wasn't sure about somebody else's problems. Cabs are much less risky.

if it's good enough for buddy guy, it's good enough for me.

i went to his club in chicago about ten years ago on a monday night during open jam night. about eleven thirty i noticed him standing near the back of the bar. then two minutes later he was up onstage playing with the house band. he played for about 1 1/2 hours. incredible..i will never forget it.

I've never been there, but "Legends" is on my list of Blues places to hit. It looks like he'll be in his new place before I ever get to Chi-town, though.

I recently acquired a used Blues Deville from 94' for $500. It's a 4x10 and made in America unlike the reissues now. It is a great sounding amp and probably one of my favorites. It has a lot of volume and is great for my style of playing. Had to replace tubes and a jack but it was totally worth it. Especially with tube amps you can't go wrong looking for used, you can usually strike a deal somewhere. The new Blues Deville's are $1000 but you can generally get a good amp for half that price if you know what to look for.
