Just got a new Blues Jr. yesterday and want to put in a WGS Vintage 30 I have. I thought it was supposed to be fairly straightforward but now it looks like there will need to be some disassembly to get speakers in and out. I need advice on simplest way to do a swap. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.

You have to remove the back panel then remove the entire amp chassis in order to change the speaker.

Thanks, thats what I was afraid of. And I suppose I should remove the tubes first and keep my fingers away from the caps etc. as I don't know how to drain everything first?

That's all I did when I pulled my chassis.

Get a Ruby Reverb pan before you change speakers: I put one in my tweed NOS and it was a little tight getting the screws back in. The RR is superior to the stock item, and, as long as you're taking it all apart anyway, you might as well go for it.

I installed a Weber Beam Blocker in mine, for which I had to pull the speaker, with all the attendant disassembly, so I know whereof I speak. Still in all, it was easily doable on a Saturday morning.

The best tip is to use a powered screwdriver: otherwise you'll be turning and turning and turning....

I agree on the powered screwdriver.

My BluesJr. has the same "mods" as LP and it will be well worth it
to do them now.
Don't know how your speaker will add to the sound but let us know.
Many of us are interested in "bolt-on" mods.
Especially a Saturday morning project !

Has anyone tried the Mercury transformer upgrade? It's $90 for the transformer. At the moment I'm very happy with my BJ, and it would have to be quite an improvement to justify the cost.

Thanks for the replies. I have thought of getting a Ruby reverb can. I need a Fender 9" correct? A beam blocker might be a little advanced for me at this point but I am open to suggestions. I have a screwgun. The Vintage 30 clone in a pine cab I built sounds much better than the stock Eminence in the Jr., much less harsh and much louder. I won't know how the V 30 sounds in the Jr. until I do the surgery.

I have another question- When I play the new Jr. with the internal speaker there is a soft rattle or vibration, but not when I use the external speaker. I have read the tubes in a Jr. can rattle. Anyone dealt with this problem?

Everybody loves it when I show pics of my Blues Jr. It has been a while since I posted them, so I'll put them up here.

Custom made Walnut 2x12 cabinet, Chassis is completely stock, NOS tubes, H and M Scumback speakers.

Ruby Reverb makes a Blues Jr model that drops right in. The Beam Blocker snuggles in front of the speaker: the only difficulty I had was lining up all the screws and washers to mount it and the speaker on the baffle. I tend to think that the BB works better with the Fender speaker than with the upgraded ones (I put a BB on my modified Pignose G40V and it made a much more dramatic difference).

I did the speaker swap this morning. It was easy, was back playing before 8am. I used pieces of masking tape on the cabinet to indicate where the chassis goes to make it easier to line up the machine screw holes upon reassembly. The much maligned stock Eminence seems like a serious speaker, especially compared to the 12" speaker that came with my Fender 65 DSP. Unlike some I cannot say the swap totally "woke up" the amp. But to my inexperienced ears the WGS Vintage 30 clone does seem to have a smoother tone and is louder. Fender has produced 800 BJr.s with Celestion Vintage 30s that they call Texas Red and they sell for $575.

I didn't put in a Ruby tubes reverb tank but I think I can do that later without removing the chassis (short screwdriver) or if need be it is not hard to remove the chassis. The tube rattle I was having has mostly gone away. Switching the power tubes with each other seems to have helped. So I am set for now and enjoying the Junior a lot. Thanks for the help.
