Anyone got any experience/ ideas? What's the verdict - it sounds good but is there any risk of damage to the amp ? Are they reliably gigworthy? There seem to be a few rival manufacturers - any opinions? This link is to an ebay seller for example

The Volume Box is basically a potentiometer between 2 jacks. Here is a schematic so you could build your own. http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/newland/2081/id3.htm
Also check out this page. http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/tooloud.html
I built one to use with my Blues Deville to give a little more control of the volume level. It works for what it is and won't hurt anything although I still couldn't get the tone I was looking for. Within weeks I traded for a Blues Jr. and now I have what I wanted.

These boxes are the equivalent of putting a volume pedal in the effects loop. The box will make the volume control more linear and easier to manage, but it will not make your amp sound better. You will get preamp overdrive / distortion, just like you get right now with the master volume. The box is completely different from an attenuator, which plugs between the power amp and the speaker and allows you to get power tube distortion at more manageable levels.

Thanks for the link to the HR 'handbook' - really useful. Cheers.

I use a volume pedal, it's just more convenient for me. I just makes the volume easier to control. Either way works. It won't make the amp sound better though. I find the pedal easier to control on the fly.
